MAT5335 Project 4 due Friday 10 February

The first four questions are about visualizing data.  The relevant reading materials are:
* How to Display Data Badly
* PDF from The Elements of Graphing Data
* PDF from Creating More Effective Graphs

1. Visit http://www.informationisbeautiful.net/ and find at least two plots (provide links) that violate the concept of effective data visualization.  Write a paragraph about each plot, with a critique of what aspects of the plotting could be improved. Imagine, for instance, that you were going to correspond with the people who designed the plot, and give them guidance about how to make a more effective depiction of the data.  

If you were to write this in Word, 12pt Times font, single spaced, each paragraph should take up about 1/4 of the page.

2. Visit the website Information is Beautiful, again.  This time, find at least two plots  that do an overall good job of effective data visualization. Justify the reasons why you think that the plots are effective.

3. The Wealth and Health of Nations website, http://www.gapminder.org/world, is a fun depiction of data. On the other hand, as with many depictions of data, it violates some of the techniques of effective data display. Please write an explanation of which techniques of effective data display are violated. If you imagine you are writing a constructive criticism to the authors of this animation, please make suggestions for how the depiction of data (for the health and wealth, over the years displayed) could have been done more effectively. 

4. Visit https://fivethirtyeight.com/tag/data-visualization/.  Pick at least one chart that does an overall good job of effective data visualization, and one that does not.  Justify your reasoning.

6. How many refunds are there per candidate?  What is the total for each candidate?

9. Restrict your data to employer EASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY.  How many total donations were there?  Per individual, how many donations did they make?  What was the sum per person?  

10. For each zip code, who (HC or DT) received donations?  How much?
