2010 National Survey of Student Engagement

Survey Administration, Sampling, and Response Rate
Since 2000, the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) has assessed the amount of time and effort first-year students and seniors devote to their educational experience and what schools are doing to engage and support them.  In 2010, almost 394,000 students at more than six hundred colleges and universities responded to the survey.

EIU's NSSE project was overseen by the VPAA Office.  The survey itself was administered by staff at Indiana University-Bloomington who, on behalf of Provost Lord and Vice President Nadler, contacted 1745 first-time freshmen and 1676 graduating seniors (identified by the EIU Registrar) via email.  During Spring 2010, students received multiple email reminders to complete the eighty-five question survey online. They also were asked to provide demographic information and any personal observations they wished to.

A total of 987 EIU freshmen and seniors participated in NSSE, for a response rate of 29%.

Key Results
On average, EIU seniors’ responses to survey questions related to their satisfaction with EIU were significantly more positive than those of their peers:

  • 93% of EIU seniors rated their educational experience at EIU as “good” or “excellent.”
  • 90% of EIU seniors indicated that they would “definitely” or “probably-yes” choose EIU if they could start over again.

Additional results are available on EIU's College Portrait.
