Guidelines for going out
You’ve got everything you need for a night out: keys, cell-phone, and a few dollars. Follow these guidelines for a safe, fun night out.
5:30 P.M.—Planning Ahead and Getting Ready
Before going out, determine in advance how much you will drink. This will save you on over-spending at the bar as well as keeping you in charge of your night. If you’re under 21 it is against the law to drink alcohol! Besides getting yourself into trouble you can also get your friends into trouble if you violate this law. Drinking in the presence of someone 21 years or older, can place that person at risk with possible charges of providing a minor with alcohol.
Designate a sober person in your group before leaving. If something were to happen during your night out (someone feeling ill, over-intoxication, or a theft) he or she can be the one to assess the situation without being under any kind of influence.
Keep in mind that not everyone goes out and drinks! Besides, it is classy to be sober versus trashy and drunk. No one wants sloppy friends. So, stay cool and sober tonight!
8:30 P.M.—Traveling to Your Destination
Always travel to and from social activities in a group. To walk alone is risky; be safe and find a pal headed in the same direction, it’s safer for them too.
Keep in mind that when traveling on campus there are emergency safety phones. If an emergency arises while walking through campus, by all means use the safety phones—they are there for you!
8:45 P.M.—At the Party
If you are drinking make sure you are eating food as well. This will help you absorb the alcohol you’ve already consumed, keeping you safer from alcohol poisoning and risky situations.
Pass on drinking games, keg stands, and beer bongs.
Don’t leave your drink unattended.
Remember, drugs and alcohol do not mix. Even over-the-counter and prescription drugs can be dangerous when combined with alcohol.
Watch out for your friends.
Sip, don’t gulp.
Treat your hosts, their home, and the other guests with respect.
Avoid crowded balconies.
12:30 A.M.—Leaving the Party
Clean up after yourself before leaving a party. This will help you receive an invite to the next party.
Don’t carry any open alcohol containers while outside a party’s boundaries (this includes plastic cups). This will only draw attention to you from local law enforcement.
Do not leave with any drinks.
Leave with everyone you came with, unless you’re sure of his/her safety.
If police are called—be respectful, and don’t lie, this will only get you into more trouble and decrease your chances of receiving graces.
If you’re unable to walk home, call a taxi. Try EIU’s Panther Express Shuttle, which runs routes through campus. (To check their schedule, look at their website at www.eiu.edu/~stuaff/shuttle/index.php)
