FINAL REPORT FROM
THE COMMITTEE ON COMMITTEES
FACULTY SENATE
April 7, 1998

Members: Norbert Furumo (Chair), Gary Foster, Gail Lockhart, Nancy Marlow, Hal Nordin, James Tidwell, Ann Zahlan and Lankford Walker

Late in the fall semester of 1997, a subcommittee of the Faculty Senate was formed to deal with a recommendation by the NCA to "Create a process that reviews campus committees, defines their roles and responsibilities, and delineates representation and membership criteria."

A summary of the subcommittee's actions are listed below. The committee has:

decided that it would only be concerned with those committees for which the Faculty Senate makes appointments or hold elections. In addition, we encourage these committees to periodically address the Faculty Senate to send a memo to Chair of the Faculty Senate describing their activities.

decided that the Faculty Senate could serve as a clearing house for committees on campus. This could be thought of as a service for the campus community to facilitate problem solving without the unnecessary formation of ad-hoc committees and task forces.

obtained by-laws and a brief statement of purpose for most of the committees/advisory boards/councils for which the Faculty Senate holds elections or makes appointments in accordance with Article II.A.7 of the Faculty Senate by-laws.

discussed whether committees that did not meet often or not at all should be dissolved or denied the privilege of having its members appointed or elected via the Faculty Senate. It was decided that no action should be taken against such committees.

learned that the newly formed International Programs Advisory Committee will have representatives appointed by the Faculty Senate. We would like Dr. Boulter to know that the Faculty Senate is ready to appoint members to this committee. Also, we have learned that the University Studies Advisory Committee will have CAA as its confirming body.

received clarification regarding the Civil Rights, Affirmative Action and Diversity Advisory Committee. It is now understood that this group meets on demand as determined by the director of Civil Rights, Affirmative Action and Diversity, Cynthia Nichols.
