Catalog Description:    

An introduction to MIS by management level.  Special emphasis is given to database analysis, design and development.  Other topics include: telecommunications, types of IS, approaches to systems development, and security.

Prerequisites:

BUS 1950 and junior standing or permission of the chair.

Teaching Method:

The class will be taught as a combination of lectures, group discussion, exercises, and case studies.

Required Text: 

Business Driven Information Systems, by Baltzan Paige and Phillips Amy, McGraw-Hill, New York, NY 10020, 2007.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
Content Knowledge (K):
1.      Explain the concept of a computer based information system including detailed knowledge of
         the system components and how they evolved and interact.
2.      Demonstrate an understanding of hardware and software.
3.      Explain data communications and telecommunications concepts in a business environment. 
4.      Explain types of data communication networks typically found in businesses.
5.      Distinguish and relate transaction processing systems, management information systems,
         decision support systems, expert systems, executive information systems and knowledge
         management systems.  Compare their components, major uses, benefits, and limitations.

Skills Development (S):
1.      Solve a database problem using appropriate design methodologies.  Demonstrate: database
         creation, manipulation, queries, and forms and reports generation.
2.      Use Internet technology to research and analyze information.
3.      Use typical business software packages to solve business problems.

Attitude/Values Development (A):

1.      Recognize the value of the database management system concept; functions, uses, and types.
2.      Be aware of the systems development life cycle and alternative analysis and design
         methods in solving business problems.
3.      Understand the role of end user computing and its impact and value to organizations.
4.      Realize the importance of computer security, privacy, and ethics in today’s business
         oganizations.


 

Grade Calculation

Grades will be calculated by dividing the points amassed by the number possible.  The resulting percentage will be assigned a grade based on the following scale:

            90% or better.............................A

            80-89%.....................................B

            70-79%.....................................C

            60-69%.....................................D


Points possible may vary, but tentatively they will be as follows:

            ACCESS LABs...........................45

Grading: 

 

Examinations

The exams will cover the material discussed in class and in the readings. The final examination is comprehensive, but will emphasize the “new” material presented since the last exam. The examinations are closed books and closed notes.

Exercises and Case Studies

Each student will be responsible for three exercises or case evaluations. You will utilize the concepts learned throughout the class textbook to answer questions related to the specific case of a company assigned by the instructor. Each student will be a consultant for the company.

ACCESS LABS

Three fifteen-point Lab assignments on the ACCESS database software will be assigned. These assignments will be basic assignments to insure that the students are knowledgeable in the "mechanics" of the ACCESS software package. Each of the fifteen-point labs may be assigned in one part or more. No late assignments will be accepted.

ACCESS Project

An ACCESS project will be assigned. The objective of this assignment is to make sure students have a good practical knowledge of ACCESS features like creating forms, reports, and queries.

Policies

 

1.

Attendance: In accordance with University policy, students are expected at attend class unless prevented by Illness, an official University activity, or an emergency. Students who miss class due to an excused absence will be allowed to make up missed work or submit assignments without penalty. An absence from class will be considered an "excused absence" under the following circumstances:
a. Absence due to illness. An absence due to illness is excused ONLY IF the student notifies the professor of the absence in advance (i.e., prior to the missed class) and provides documentation of the illness upon return to class.
b. Absence due to an official University activity. Absence due to an official University activity is an excused absence only if the student notifies the professor of the absence in advanced (i.e., prior to the missed class) and provides written documentation of the University activity from an appropriate University representative prior to the absence.
c. Absence due to emergency. Evaluation of whether an absence due to an emergency is an excused absence will be made by the professor on a case by case basis. At a minimum, the student should notify the professor of the absence as soon as possible and should provide documentation of the emergency.

Academic Integrity: All students are expected to comply with University rules and regulations on academic Integrity and honesty. These rules and regulations are summarized in the Student Conduct Code in "A Student Guide to Academic Integrity," which is posted in the classroom and in the Undergraduate Catalog. Violations of these rules and regulations will result in zero points on the assignment in question. Additional disciplinary sanctions may be imposed.

All students are expected to take exams at the time scheduled. No make-up exam will be given. If you miss an exam, your final will be weighted appropriately.
If, during the week of finals you notify the instructor that you are unable to take the final due to an excused absence, you will receive an incomplete in the class and a time will be set up for you to take an exam after finals week.

4.

If, in the viewpoint of the instructor, two or more individuals submit any work for this class with the same (or approximately the same) content, the point value assigned to the work will be equally divided between the individuals

During the first week of class, please send me an e-mail with the subject of "BUS3500 – e-mail". Failure to send me your e-mail address will not be used as an excuse for missing any information that I could send to the class, such as: class schedule changes, homework assignments, help for homework, other relevant information.
