Examinations

The exams will cover the material discussed in class and in the readings. The final examination is comprehensive, but will emphasize the “new” material presented since the last exam. The examinations are closed books and closed notes.

Exercises and Case Studies

Each student will be responsible for two exercises or case studies. You will utilize the concepts learned throughout the class textbook to answer questions related to the specific case of a company assigned by the instructor.

ACCESS LABS

Three fifteen-point Lab assignments on the ACCESS database software will be assigned. These assignments will be basic assignments to insure that the students are knowledgeable in the "mechanics" of the ACCESS software package. All three or four lab exercises will be worth 50 points. Each lab may be assigned in one part or more. No late assignments will be accepted.

ACCESS Project

An ACCESS project will be assigned. The objective of this assignment is to make sure students have a good practical knowledge of ACCESS features like creating forms, reports, and queries.

Policies

1.

Attendance: In accordance with University policy, students are expected to attend class unless prevented by Illness, an official University activity, or an emergency. Students who miss class due to an excused absence will be allowed to make up missed work or submit assignments without penalty. An absence from class will be considered an "excused absence" under the following circumstances:
a. Absence due to illness. An absence due to illness is excused ONLY IF the student notifies the professor of the absence in advance (i.e., prior to the missed class) and provides documentation of the illness upon return to class.
b. Absence due to an official University activity. Absence due to an official University activity is an excused absence only if the student notifies the professor of the absence in advanced (i.e., prior to the missed class) and provides written documentation of the University activity from an appropriate University representative prior to the absence.
c. Absence due to emergency. Evaluation of whether an absence due to an emergency is an excused absence will be made by the professor on a case by case basis. At a minimum, the student should notify the professor of the absence as soon as possible and should provide documentation of the emergency.

2.

Academic integrity: All students are expected to comply with University rules and regulations on academic integrity and honesty.  These rules and regulations are summarized in the Student Conduct Code (http://www.eiu.edu/~judicial). Disciplinary sanctions may be imposed for violations of these rules and regulations.

Turnitin. To encourage original and authentic written work, students may be required to submit their written assignments in this course for review to Turnitin.com, or other systems designed to detect plagiarized material, and those assignments will become a searchable document with the Turnitin (or other system’s) database.

3.

All students are expected to take exams at the time scheduled. If, during the week of finals you notify the instructor that you are unable to take the final due to an excused absence, you will receive an incomplete in the class and a time will be set up for you to take an exam after finals week.

4.

If, in the viewpoint of the instructor, two or more individuals submit any work for this class with the same (or approximately the same) content, the point value assigned to the work will be equally divided between the individuals

5.

During the first week of class, please send me an e-mail with the subject of "BUS3500 – e-mail". Failure to send me your e-mail address will not be used as an excuse for missing any information that I could send to the class, such as: class schedule changes, homework assignments, help for homework, other relevant information.

EWP Program

EIU requires that all students—including transfer students—submit papers completed in EIU classes to the Electronic Writing Portfolio. New transfer students should make at least one submission during their first semester. If you transferred to EIU this semester, you may use a paper from this class as an EWP submission. Please talk with me as soon as possible so that I can assist you in selecting a paper to submit to the EWP. If you need further information, please see the EWP website at http://www.eiu.edu/~assess/ewpmain.php and/or talk with your academic advisor.

Students with Disabilities:

Appropriate academic support is available for students with a documented disability.  Please notify your instructor and contact the Office of Disability Services (581-6583) for further information

Emergency preparedness plan:

Instructions about what to do in the event of an emergency are posted in all classrooms on Eastern’s campus.  Students and faculty are responsible for acquainting themselves as to the specific instructions so that they will be prepared in the event of an emergency.
