Building Service Worker Duties

Building Service Workers (BSWs) are responsible for custodial services for the academic and administrative buildings and for other areas of campus, including changing fluorescent and incandescent light bulbs. BSWs work various shifts, ranging from 5:00 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.  Public areas have the highest cleaning priority.

Unusual/Extraordinary Events
Building Services is also responsible for setting up special events. To reserve a campus facility and to ensure that there is no other conflicting event scheduled, contact the Campus Scheduling Office at extension 3861.  Next, discuss event details with the Set Up Supervisor at extension 7232. If the event requires that tables and chairs be set up, a drawing may be required prior to approval of the event. Lastly, contact the Campus Safety Officer at extension 7068 to ensure that the event set up adheres to pertinent safety regulations.

Requests for Special Custodial Services
Requests for specialized cleaning or other special custodial services should be arranged through the Work Control Department, extension 3416. Emergency clean up and/or reports of special needs should be reported to the BSW supervisor through the Work Control Department, extension 3416.

Though buildings are usually unlocked by a Building Service Worker, work shifts will not always allow for a BSW to be available to open and/or lock a building.  The University Police Department, extension 3213, should be contacted when no Building Service Personnel are available.

Comments on service are welcomed and considered an essential tool for growth and improvement. The Building Services Department can be contacted by telephone at (217) 581-7232. The department can also be contacted through the Custodial Manager, Bob Hill.
