Letter from Provost Blair Lord
A new Internal Governing Policy has also been established at Eastern, i.e., IGP 48.4 Use of Materials Protected by Copyright, to provide an institutional policy statement regarding copyrighted materials. We are pleased to announce that this website has been established to provide the campus community with information pertaining to the use of copyrighted materials. Appropriate use of copyrighted materials has always been a challenging matter for universities and the proliferation of electronic means of distribution has only exacerbated this challenge.
To assist Eastern in addressing these matters, an ad hoc committee chaired by James Tidwell and Jan Sung prepared a report suggesting several steps to inform the campus community better and bring some information resources to this task. The other members of this committee included Joe Barron, Pete Grant, Michael Hoadley, John Looby, Jeri Matteson-Huges, Patty Poulter, Christie Roskzowski, and Daniel Sheeran. The copyright website is one outcome of the work of this committee. The website is still having information added to it and will be dynamically updated in the future, but the intent is to provide information regarding appropriate use to those desiring to use copyrighted materials.
There has also been established a new IGP, IGP 48.4 Use of Materials Protected by Copyright, to provide an institutional policy statement regarding copyrighted materials. Finally, Jan Sung, who has been providing advice and oversight regarding copyright matters for some time, is now formally designated as the institutional official authorized to provide guidance needed in interpreting matters pertaining to use of copyrighted materials.
We hope these steps bring some useful information and order to those desiring to use copyrighted materials properly. Thank you again to the members of the committee and Ryan Gibson for assisting in developing this website.
