FreeEdgar

FreeEdgar is a web site that can be used to access forms that must be filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) by publicly traded companies. The annual report is contained in the Form 10-K that must be filed with the SEC within 90 days after the end of the company's fiscal year. To locate your company's Form 10-K:

  1. This process will be easier if you use Netscape Navigator found under Communication on the Start menu in the lab. If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer, note the difference in the instructions for step 7.
  2. Go to the FreeEdgar web site at www.freeedgar.com
  3. Enter your company's ticker symbol in the Ticker Symbols search box and click Search
  4. Under the Company Information section, you will see the name of the company and the ticker symbol(s) for the exchanges that trade the company's stock. Click on View Filings in this section.
  5. Scroll down the list of filings until you find the company's most recent 10-K. The form type will be 10-K405 and the description will be Annual Report. Click on the link for the 10-K405.
  6. Click on the RTF button at the top of the page to download a printable version of the annual report. In the campus computer labs, this should take a few seconds. From a dial-up Internet connection, this may take a few minutes.
  7. If you are using Netscape Navigator, you should be asked if you want to open the file or save it to disk. You want to save the file to your floppy disk if you are in the computer lab. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, the file should open as a Word document in a frame in your web browser. If so, use the File, Save As commands on the browser menu to save the file to a floppy disk.
  8. The Form 10-K will be several pages long. I would not print the entire document. What you need to print are the financial statements and some of the notes to the financial statements. Here are the problems you may encounter:
    1. The text is small and hard to read. Be careful, however, about increasing the font size or it may cause your financial statements to "explode" and numbers may move to different lines making them difficult to decipher.
    2. You need the Income Statement, Balance Sheet and Statement of Cash Flows. However you may find:
      1. The Income Statement may be called the Statement of Operations or Results of Operations. As you know, you are looking for a statement covering a period of time and including revenue and expense items, as you know.
      2. The Balance Sheet may be called the Statement of Financial Position. You are looking for a statement listing assets, liabilities and owners equity.
      3. If there is more than one set of financial statements, you want the set covering the last two years and you also want the financial statements for the entire company, the "Consolidated Statements".
