Why Philosophy Majors Should Study Abroad

By Jonelle DePetro, Ph.D.
Chair, Philosophy

Jonelle DePetro

"Philosophers are notoriously curious. The domain of philosophy uniquely includes all other disciplines, history, science, art, literature, language. What better way then, to discover the truths about one’s history and the possibilities for one’s future than to include study abroad as part of the process of education? Education truly is a process for philosophers; it is not simply job training or
career building. It is a way of understanding the world and one’s unique position in it. Through study abroad students experience a broader understanding of community, of what brought us to where we are now and what the alternatives are for where we might go. They are then better situated to question their own responsibilities, social and moral, both as individuals and as global citizens. Philosophers ask a lot of questions. Seeking the answers is itself part of what it means to be an educated person. The truth, our real goal, rarely comes all at once. It is a process – one of exploration and discovery. Study abroad is an opportunity to become a true explorer and seeker of knowledge. It is one of the most valuable learning experiences a university can offer. And by the way, employers know this."
