Program Highlights

Learn FRENCH, THEATRE, and ART in one of the most beautiful cities of France, or if you already speak French quite well, immerse yourself in French language and culture by direct enrolling in the University.

Avignon is located between the Alps and the Pyrenees mountain ranges, just 50 miles from the Mediterranean Sea. It’s a fantastic cultural area and place to live. In 2000, it was elected the European Capital of Culture, as a city rich with history, monuments, and museums. The 14th century Palace of the Popes and the 12th century Saint Benezet Bridge are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Academic Programs

The University of Avignon is a French public institution of higher education founded in 1303. The main campus is located in the heart of the historic city centre.

Semester Options
If your purpose for studying abroad is to learn French, then you can study at their Centre Universitaire de’Etudes Francaises d’Avignon (CUEFA) during the Fall or Spring semesters. It was awarded the Foreign Language Quality Label, French as a Foreign Language in 2008, and is a member of ADCUEFE, the national network of French language university centres.

If your French language skills are advanced, you can direct enroll in a wide variety of courses taught in French (cost is approximately 174 euro for all undergraduate courses combined, not each).

Summer Options
The university also offers excellent summer courses for students interested in both French and Theatre, in connection with the world-famous theatre festival that attracts people from all over the world to Avignon.

  • French and Theatre (Option 1) This 2.5 week course will help you develop your French language skills in conjunction with the Theatre Festival in Avignon. 3 to 4 credits offered. Minimum requirement: FLF 1102.
  • French Language (30 hours) - Students are tested and then placed into groups depending on their level (beginner to advanced). Both oral and written skills are covered, after a needs analysis based on initial placement. A range of comminicateiave activities connectd with the Theatre Festival are carried out (vox pops, interviews, cretive writing leading to the production and ediing of a newspaer, etc.), as well as an introduction to the theatre plays planned in the cultural program.

    Theatre Workshop (15 hours) - Voice and movement, improvisation, then work from text. The workshop will lead to a performance which will conclude the course.

    French Theatre History (5 hours) - In connection with the shows planned in the theatre program.

    Visits and excursions: Guided tour of Avignon, Visit of the Palace of the Popes, Visit of the Mason Jean Vilar (theatre festival museum), One-day excursion

  • French Language and Theatre (Option 2) - This 3-week course includes advanced French language and methodology (35 hours), discovery of contemporary theatre creation (10 hours), and a theatre workshop (15 hours), as well as meetings with theatre professionals (actors, producers, etc.). It also includes a guided tour of Avignon in connection with the Theatre Festival. Minimum requirement: FLF 2202.

Foreign Entry Requirements

Passport
To enter France, you must have a valid passport. If you are a U.S. citizen and do not currently have a valid passport, or if your passport will expire during the time you will be overseas, please go to the U.S. State Department web site for information on how to apply for/renew your passport.

Visa
Stays exceeding 90 days require a visa.  To apply for a visa it requires a passport (3 months validity after departure), 4 long-stay visa applications, 5 recent passport sized photos, 3 copies proof of sufficient funds, proof of valid medical insurance, 3 copies police clearance (obtained from police department in U.S.), and a letter certifying that no paid activity will occur.
