Program Highlights

Dublin City University (DCU) is a modern, city campus located between Dublin City centre and the Dublin airport. Students can get to the energetic city centre of Dublin from DCU in just a 10-minute bus ride. Established in 1980, DCU has already grown to a student population of over 9,500 (including over 800 international students).

Dublin's population has reached over one million people, but the city still retains its charm and village feel. The Liffey River separates Dublin city into what is called the north side and the south side. There are many museums, sights, shops, restaurants, theatres, and pubs scattered throughout the city. Additionally, the small coastal towns that many associate with Ireland are easily reached by traveling just outside the city.

Academic Programs

Academic programs at DCU are divided into 5 faculties. Study abroad students can choose from courses in any of the following 4 faculties:

1. DCU Business School

• Accounting, Economics, Finance, Human Resources, Law, Management, Marketing

2. Engineering and Computing

• Computing, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering

3. Science and Health

• Biotechnology, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Nursing, Physical Sciences, Health and Human Performance

4. Humanities and Social Sciences

• Applied Language & Intercultural Studies, Communications, Education Studies, Fiontar, Law and Government

When choosing courses at DCU, you must look within each individual department. Meaning, if you want to take an accounting course, you must go to the Accounting Department web page and look to see which accounting classes are offered. There is no centralized location to look up courses.

Student Life

Due to DCU's location in a residential area of the city, students get a sense of campus life and security that may not be felt in other city campuses. The International Office at DCU provides an orientation session for all new international/study abroad students to help you get acquainted with the campus and city. They also organize social activities throughout the semester and year. On campus, you will have access to academic advising, the DCU Sports Complex, the library, all restaurant facilities, computer labs, the Student Health Centre, Disability Support Services, an all-inclusive Interfaith Centre, Counseling Services, Careers Service, and the Student Union.

If you want to experience the rural areas of Ireland, just a few minutes away from the hustle and bustle of vibrant Dublin are miles of peaceful seaside, breathtaking mountain regions, and rolling green fields. It only takes about 3 hours to travel from Dublin to Galway (on the west coast of the country), so traveling around Ireland is very manageable. You can also hop on a flight to explore other areas of Europe. Country-to-country flights within Europe are quite affordable.

Housing

If you would like to live on-campus at DCU, you have two housing options:

1. Hampstead Apartments (ONLY for students studying the entire academic year)

• Fully-furnished apartments
• Each apartment has five ensuite, bedrooms and a shared living/kitchen/dining area
• Each bedroom has a study area and internet connectivity
• Telephone (incoming calls only) and cable connection in apartment

2. College Park Apartments (available to students studying for one or two semesters)

• Fully-furnished apartments
• Each apartment has four or five ensuite, bedrooms and a shared living/kitchen/dining area
• Each bedroom has a study area and internet connectivity
• Telephone (incoming calls only) and cable connection in apartment
• College Park also has deluxe bedrooms available at a higher rate. All bedrooms are double rooms with ensuite facilities. Each bedroom in the deluxe accommodation has cable connection, internet access, telephone (incoming calls only), TV, hairdryer and a study area.

Foreign Entry Requirements

Passport
To enter Ireland, you must have a valid passport. If you are a U.S. citizen and do not currently have a valid passport, or if your passport will expire during the time you will be overseas, please go to the U.S. State Department web site for information on how to apply for/renew your passport.

Visa
Tourists are not required to obtain visas for stays less than 90 days, but may be asked to show onward/return ticket.  For longer stays or to work or study in Ireland, permission must be obtained from the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform within the first 90 days of arrival.  Submit 1 application form, a completed alien registration form, a valid passport, 4 passport photos, proof of sufficient funds.  Students and persons who plan to work in Ireland require additional information.  For additional information, consult the Embassy of Ireland, 2234 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20008 (202/462-3939) or the Consulate General in Chicago (312/337-1868).
