Program Highlights

Universität Lüneburg was founded as a teacher training college, but now you can choose from a variety of disciplines taught in German and English. During the time of its switch to a full-fledged German university, Lüneburg had around 1,000 students. The university now has over 7,000 students.

Located in the state of Lower Saxony, Lüneburg not only has a rich history but a lively present. With numerous museums, theatres, cinemas, pubs, bistros, cafes, and discos, you will find plenty to do and see. Stop by the city markets on Wednesdays or Saturdays to experience the mixing of old and new in modern Lüneburg.

Academic Programs

Leuphana University is a member of a consortium of universities in Lower Saxony, the EU-Liaison Office Hannover/Hildesheim located at Leibnitz University Hannover serves as the central office of the consortium.

The central office offers students and graduates from foreign countries help in finding an internship in the region of Lower Saxony and in putting together an application. The office can also assist students in finding accommodation.

EIU students are registered as exchange students at Leuphana University Lueneburg and take a three-week German language class in the beginning of the semester and participate in a workshop some time during the semester.

The winter semester at Luneburg is equivalent to our fall semester at EIU; the summer is equivalent to our spring semester.

Student Life

The International Office at Lüneburg organizes activites and social events throughout the semester/year specifically for international students. Some events you might see on the calendar include: bowling night, tour of the city, International Cafe night, trips to area cities, a theatre performance or canoe trip.

Travel around the city is easily done on bike or on foot; however, your student ID will also enable you to ride on the city bus for free. If you want to travel to other areas of Germany or Europe, you can travel by bus, train, or airplane. Public transportation in Europe is excellent and affordable.

Housing

International program students may opt for pre-arranged accommodation. Subject to availability, room reservations are made in either student residences on- or off-campus or in private apartments. Student and private apartments usually consist of 2-4 single rooms with a room size varying from approx. 12 to 25 square meters, 1 or 2 bathrooms and a kitchen. Apartments are usually co-ed.

For international program students, the accommodation service provides fully furnished rooms including bedding and bed linen. For placement, additional services such as furnishing, bedding and bed linen, and obligatory liability insurance a one-time service fee is charged (155 EUR for one semester, 230 EUR for two semesters). Both the service fee and the rent for one semester in full must be paid within the first ten days upon arrival. (For payment information, please see the Lüneburg International Office web site.)

Foreign Entry Requirements

Passport
To enter Germany, you must have a valid passport. If you are a U.S. citizen and do not currently have a valid passport, or if your passport will expire during the time you will be overseas, please go to the U.S. State Department web site for information on how to apply for/renew your passport.

Visa
Students must apply for a student visa (Visum zu Studienzwecken or Bewerbervisum) early in advance at the Consulate General in Chicago (312/580-1199), presenting the following documents:

• Valid passport and additional passport-sized photos

• Confirmation of application or admission to a German Institution of Higher Education

• Financial Statement

Do not enter Germany with a tourist visa since there is no way to get it changed into a student visa.

A student visa gives permission to enter Germany and to stay in the country for a short time period only (max. up to three months). In order to get permission to stay for the entire study period, students must apply for the residence permit at the local registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt/Ausländerbehörde) within a week upon arrival in Germany.

Residence Permit
All international students, including nationals from the EU and EFTA member states as well as the USA, must apply for the residence permit. The application includes:

• The completed application form

• Proof of registration with the University

• Statement that the living expenses are covered

• 2 passport-sized photos

• Passport or ID

• Entry visa for study purposes if required

For residents of non-EU countries a small charge will be made. Please note that you have to sign off when you leave the country!
