Program Highlights

The Middelburg Center for Transatlantic Studies (MCTS)--formerly The Maastricht Center for Transatlantic Studies--is based at the Roosevelt Academy, an International Honors College of Utrecht University, in Middelburg, Zeeland, the Netherlands. The MCTS offers two semester-length study-abroad programs plus a one-month summer program per year, focusing on a comparative, multidisciplinary approach to transatlantic relationships and developments. Staff and students from Consortium Institutions gather in a central location to form an interactive, international learning community. Its mission statement:

The Middelburg Center for Transatlantic Studies seeks to encourage and promote a transatlantic perspective by providing faculty and students with a unique multicultural environment in order to aid their personal, professional, and academic development.

Academic Programs

The academic structure at MCTS is unique. There are no permanent faculty members at MCTS; faculty members from participating members of the consortium take turns teaching courses. Students may also take courses at Roosevelt Academcy (RA), where the MCTS program is hosted.

Roosevelt Academy is an international liberal arts honors college with 500 students from 55 different nations. The language of instruction is English. Unlike many liberal arts colleges in the US, Roosevelt offers science courses, also. There are never more than 25 students in a class. Classes are enjoyable and intellectually stimulating.

In Fall 2010, semester courses transitioned from the "block system" to a regular semester system.  From this point forward, students studying at MCTS  take four four-credit courses during the semester. Four three-credit courses (two business and two non) continue to be offered during each summer block.

You can view the courses offered here.

Student Life

Students studying at MCTS are from all over the world, although the majority are Americans. The MCTS program is very small, and you will get to know the other students and faculty well.

As Roosevelt's founding Dean puts it, Middelburg is an enchanting univesity town covered in wrapping paper. As in other university cities, one can find pubs, clubs, theatres, cinemas, sporting facilities, and more. The city is located centrally on the Peninsula of Walcheren. Beaches are close to the campus, too. Cultural, folkloristic, music and film festivals are organized in town and in other cities thorughout the province of Zeeland every year. Amsterdam and Brussels are less than two hours away by train.

Housing

You will be living in the residence halls with the students from Roosevelt Academy and/or MCTS. Cooking facilities are available, but there is no cafeteria.

Foreign Entry Requirements

Passport
To enter the Netherlands, you must have a valid passport. If you are a U.S. citizen and do not currently have a valid passport, or if your passport will expire during the time you will be overseas, please go to the U.S. State Department web site for information on how to apply for/renew your passport.

Visa
The MCTS application contains information for students on what they need to obtain their residence permit. You must apply BY THE DUE DATE, but you do not need to have the permit in hand before entering the Netherlands. The MCTS on-site coordinator will assist students in obtaining their residence permit upon their arrival in the Netherlands. Students need to be prepared to deposit 1000 euro in a Dutch checking account (semester programs only), for the purpose of obtaining a residence permit, but also to access printing on campus via a Dutch bank account/debit card.

Travel Document Systems (TDS) can also provide you with helpful information on every country, including entry requirements, cultural information, travel conditions, economy, and more.

You are strongly encouraged to read the U.S. State Department's Consular Information Sheet. It will provide you with a great deal of information to help you prepare for your trip.

**Please be aware that you are responsible for obtaining the most up-to-date information on entry requirements. The Office of Study Abroad only provides general information, as visa regulations and procedures are constantly changing. Please consult the Consulate for more information. **
