Program Highlights

Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) was founded in 1990 and has quickly become an institution of quality education. UPF is diverse and international, with students from around the world.

The University is located in beautifully renovated historic buildings, in various Barcelona neighborhoods, including the heart of central Barcelona, Ciutadella Park, the Ramblas, the Olympic Village, and the Port.

Barcelona is a bilingual city as the inhabitants of the area speak both Castilian Spainsh and Catalan. It offers visitors eccentric creativity and cultural diversity.

Academic Programs

The UPF Study Abroad Program was created to meet the needs of an increasing number of international students that want to spend a semester or an entire academic year in Barcelona.

EIU students are enrolled in the Hispanic and European Studies Program (HESP). This program offers language and culture classes in Spanish and Catalan, and covers a wide assortment of topcis and perspectives. Courses are taught either in English or Spanish.

If proficient in Spanish, students have the option to combine coursework in HESP with a pre-selected range of undergraduate courses from any of the UPF colleges and departments, such as ESCI (School of International Business).

Some classes that popular are:
1) Art and Artists: Focuses on the five most outstanding Spanish creators in the past century.
2) History and the City: Explores the origins, development, and future of Barceolna through a multiple perspective study which includes, urbanism, geography, demography, history, and art.
3) Images of Contemporary Spain in Film: Deals with the evolution of the media language and its aesthetics.

Student Life

Students can take advantage of the recreational activities that campus life provides at UPF. UPF offers various sports that students can participate in such as basketball, soccer ('futbol' as they call it in Spain), Rugby,Volleyball, and Water Polo.

Classrooms at UPF are fully equipped with technology. Most classes use state-of-the art computer-based educational tools to support students. Laptop computers with wireless connection to the WLAN network can also be used.

The Library provides essential support for teaching and research. It holds a collection of over 550,000 volumes of monographs, with 6,700 e-books, and there are more than 15,300 collections on paper format and access to 10,000 electronic titles is provided. The University Library forms a single entity comprising the Main Library and the Rambla, França and Mar libraries and the Library of the Jaume Vicens Vives University Institute of History (IUHJVV).

Housing

Living in Barcelona can be costly. A one-bedroom furnished aprtment can start at 360 EUR a month plus an agency fee, rental contract fees, and a deposit. Food and transportation can cost up to 185 EUR per month. There are several options available.

RESA Halls
Student can directly book a place at one of the 2 Resa halls that are affiliated with UPF, Residenca "Ciutadella" and Residencia "Campus del Mar." You can book online at www.resa.es. If you want to live in a RESA Hall, please apply early to obtain a spot. They typically run out of space very early.

Residencia Onix
Residencia Onix was built to help accomodate students wanting to study in Barcelona. It is quite expensive but they do offer a lot. Furnished double and single rooms are provided with well-equiped kitchens and bathrooms. They also provide a free internet connection per room, a telephone line for every resident, and an independent air conditioning and heating unit. Each room has a bed of 190x90cm, a closet, a table and desk lamp, drawers, chairs, rack, and cork for photographs. A mattress with case, a set of bed sheets, a blanket, a quilt, and pillow are provided by the Residence. The kitchen is equipped with a fridge, an electric stove, and smoke extractor as well as frying pans, pots, bowl, pitchers, knives, utensils, bottle opener, a colander, and a kitchen table. In addition to all of this, there is a laundry room with both washer and dryers (coin operated), a fitness room, a computer lab, a television room, and a swimming pool.

Melon District Residence
Melon District is similar to Residencia Onix. They offer single, double, and studio type rooms. This is a very new facility as it opens in the Fall 2007 semester. Services include room cleaning, Wi-Fi internet connection, catering, car park, locker, safe deposit box, bank branch, launderette, café-restaurant and 24-hour reception.

To enter Spain, you must have a valid passport. If you are a U.S. citizen and do not currently have a valid passport, or if your passport will expire during the time you will be overseas, please go to the U.S. State Department web site for information on how to apply for/renew your passport.

Visa
