Exchange Programs (STA3960 or STA5960)

You study at University "X," and a student from University "X" comes to Charleston to study at EIU. These two partner universities essentially swap students for a time being and don’t exchange any money. You will continue to pay EIU tuition and fees just as if you were still on campus, to cover the incoming exchange student. This type of program keeps administrative costs low and can be one of the most economical ways to study abroad at foreign colleges and universities that have greater tuition costs than EIU. Because of the even exchange, the number of students who can participate is limited.

Direct Enroll Programs (STA3961 or STA5961)

You enroll directly in a foreign institution, or go through a third-party provider of a study abroad program. Your enrollment doesn't depend on foreign students coming here. This institution/provider has been evaluated and approved by the Office of Study Abroad and is monitored for quality academics and service. Your EIU tuition is waived, and you are responsible for the host institution's or provider's tuition and fees. Whether you pay EIU or the Host/Provider directly depends on the agreement. Check the program budget for details.

What's a third-party provider?

A company or institution that is in the business of facilitating study abroad programs for students in a variety of locations around the world. Many of these providers have resident directors available 24/7 and include tuition, housing, insurance, and excursions in one package deal. Providers are usually the most expensive option you will find in any given country.

Faculty-led (STA3970 or STA3990-Honors or STA5970)

Departments may offer courses that have a study abroad component. These travel courses are more structured than the programs above and are usually offered during the summer. They are led by one or more EIU faculty members and tend to last between one to six weeks. Faculty members are with the students throughout the duration of the travel course and arrange a mix of lectures, exercises, excursions, and group time. This type of program has the benefit of being taught by an EIU faculty member and is excellent for forming strong mentoring relationships.

Intern-Teach (STA4275 or STA5980 and more)

More and more students are opting to fulfill internship requirements or do their student teaching overseas. Students may be registered for an STA number or a special study abroad section of any course on campus. Students who complete interships or student teaching overseas must go through the Office of Study Abroad and do NOT have to pay regular tuition and fees to EIU. They only pay a $300 study abroad administrative fee. For more information, contact the Office of Study Abroad. For any internship or student teaching experience that is not in our Program Finder, you will need to submit a Petition for Internship Approval.

Non-Partner (Other) Programs

Any study abroad program that is not in partnership with or has not been approved by EIU is considered a Non-Partner Program. For any Non-Partner Program, a student must first submit a Petition for Program Approval to the Office of Study Abroad. The likelihood for approval is high as long as the program is recognized by the Ministry of Education in the host country, and the student can demonstrate how the program meets academic and professional goals. If approved, you are still obligated to follow the study abroad process in order to receive credit and you will be responsible for paying an EIU study abroad administrative fee (regular tuition/fees are waived).
