Financial Aid FAQs

If you applied for a scholarship for the December 4 deadline you will receive an email from the Office of Study Abroad sometime in mid-January with your award and next steps.

Financial Aid

At EIU, 12 hours is considered full-time for the fall, spring, or summer terms and financial aid is available in the following manner:

  • Stafford and PLUS Loans - Must be enrolled at least half-time (6 cr) to receive assistance.
  • FWS and Perkins Loans - Must be enrolled at least half-time (6 cr) to receive assistance.
  • Federal Pell Grants - Awarded regardless of the number of hours you are enrolled and regardless of when you decide to study abroad.
  • MAP - Currently, there is no state MAP award in the summer due to funding; however, you can use MAP during the academic year for study abroad (fall or spring semester) to pay for tuition and fees for any approved study abroad program.
  • EIU and Private Scholarships - Depends on each and every scholarship and the ajoining stipulations.

Scholarship Tips

  • More national scholarship money is available for understudied locations (outside of Western Europe). You won't find too many national scholarships for London but you may for Cape Town.
  • More national scholarship money is available for programs that are a semester or longer in length. You won't find national scholarships for summer or spring break programs; however, you may be able to find internal scholarship money from your academic department at EIU.
  • Most national scholarships require early application. There's a lot of money out there for study abroad, you have to be proactive and plan ahead. Start as early as possible and pay attention to deadlines.
  • Right now, most of the big chunks of money come from national scholarships. Suprisingly, since only 1% of all college students study abroad, many are not all that competitive. One of our students studied abroad in Mexico for a year on a $5,000 Gilman Award and then went on to graduate school in Ireland on a $23,000 Rotary International Award.
