MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON ACADEMIC AFFAIRS 1-13-00

The January, 13, 2000, meeting of the Council on Academic Affairs was held at 2:00 p.m. in the Arcola/Tuscola Room.

With the change in the School of Business admission policy last year, there has been an influx of Undecided majors enrolled in upper-division business courses. If allowed to continue, those students most likely will be in violation of the 25% established by AACSB, the School of Business accrediting body.

In addition, COM 3290 and COM 3800 will have "admission to the School of Business or majoring in math" as the prerequisites for the courses. Finally, the prerequisite for AIS 4700 will be "AIS 3200, Senior standing, and admission to School of Business."

IV. New Course, SPC 2010, Introduction to Communication Theories, 99-65.

Dr. Bock, Speech Communication, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion to approve the proposal passed unanimously.

This action approves the following to become effective Fall 2000.

SPC 2010, Introduction to Communication Theories. (3-0-3) F, S. Intro Comm Theories. A survey of communication theories in rhetorical, public, interpersonal, organizational, and mediated contexts.

V. New Course, SPC 2020, Applied Communication, 99-66.

Dr. Bock, Speech Communication, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion to approve the proposal passed unanimously.

This action approves the following to become effective Fall 2000.

SPC 2020, Speech Communication Research. (3-0-3) F, S. SPC Research. Students are introduced to the speech communication discipline through encountering its publications and resources. Students will be instructed in APA writing style, research methods, major areas of study and inquiry, and exploration of current controversial issues in the discipline. Students must complete a literature review and engage in a major research project.

VI.New Course, SPC 2030, 99-67.

Dr. Bock, Speech Communication, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion to approve the proposal passed unanimously.

This action approves the following to become effective Fall 2000.

SPC 2030, Applied Communication. (3-0-3) F, S. Applied Comm. Study of communication principles and skills in applied contexts. Skills emphasized include public performance/presentations; teams, meetings, and project management; leadership and decision-making. Use and implications of new technologies are also addressed.

VII. Revision of Speech Communication Major, 99-68.

Dr. Bock, Speech Communication, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion to approve the proposal passed unanimously.

 PLS 3373, International Political Economy, (3-0-3) F, Int Pol Economy. Analysis from a political science perspective of modern theories of political economy; the role of governments in trade policy; economic development approaches; poverty in the global South; and the politics of governmental economic institutions in the international arena. Prerequisite: Three semester hours of political science or permission of the instructor.
