MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON ACADEMIC AFFAIRS 11-18-99

The November 18,1999, meeting of the Council on Academic Affairs was held at 2:00 p.m. in the Arcola/Tuscola Room.

Members present: Dr. Addison, Dr. Bock, Mr. Brinkmeyer, Mr. Davenport, Dr. T. Mason,

Dr. Methven, Dr. Obia, Dr. Owen, Ms. Riley, Dr. Shonk, Dr. Wohlstein.

Members absent: Dr. Abebe, Dr. Cosbey.

I. Minutes.

The Minutes of November 11, 1999, were approved as corrected. Under Pre-Law, the last word

in the policy change should be minor.

II. Correspondence.

    1. Letter from Jeff Sunderlin, supporting Fitness for Life class, 10/28/99.
    2. Email from B. Kuykendall, regarding overloads, 11/12/99.

3. Email from J. Cosbey, regarding her absence from the CAA meeting today.

4. Email from Sue Harvey, regarding summer grade posting proposal, 11/16/99.

5. Email from Mary Kelm, regarding the status of the "wellness" courses in general education, 11/17/99.

    1. Email from G. Aylesworth, regarding general education, 11/17/99.
    2. Email from J. Emmett, regarding general education, 11/17/99.

10. Verbal communication from B. Addison, regarding CASL and the possibility of a Spring Forum on Assessment co- sponsored by CAA. B. Addison explained what CASL is presently working on.

Dr. Wohlstein moved and Mr. Brinkmeyer seconded the motion to add the following items to the agenda. Voting will be later.

    1. New Course Proposal, FLE 3050, Culture and Language in the French-Speaking World
    2. New Course Proposal, FLE 3061, German Literature in Translation
    3. New Course Proposal, FLF 3220, French for Business
    4. New Course Proposal, FLE 3000, Media and Global Communications

 

The Council decided to change the order of the Agenda to accommodate the guests.

 

IV. Course Revision of STG 4000, 99-55.

Dr. Shank, Student Teaching, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council.

The motion passed with a vote as follows:

 Yes: Dr. Addison, Dr. Bock, Mr. Brinkmeyer, Mr. Davenport, Dr. T. Mason, Dr. Methven,

Dr. Obia, Dr. Owen, Ms. Riley, Dr. Wohlstein.

Abstain: Dr. Shonk

This action approves the following to become effective immediately.

STG 4000, Multicultural/Disabilities Practicum. (Arr.-Arr.-1) (Credit/No Credit) Twenty-five clock hours of direct participation in observation relative to populations with disabilities and those who are multicultural. Site must be approved by Director of Clinical Experiences. Required of students pursuing teacher licensure a standard secondary or standard special teaching certificate, except in Special Education and those in Communication Disorders and Sciences or in ASEP. Does not count toward graduation.

 

V. Course Revision of STG 4001, 99-56.

Dr. Shank, Student Teaching, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council.

The motion to approve the proposal passed unanimously.

This action approves the following to become effective immediately.

STG 4001. Student Teaching. (Arr.-Arr.-12, 14, 16) (Credit/No Credit) With the exception of Family and Consumer Sciences and Special Education majors, students complete 15 weeks of student teaching for 14 semester hours of credit. Family and Consumer Sciences majors complete 12 weeks of student teaching for 12 semester hours of credit. Special Education majors complete 16 weeks of student teaching for 16 semester hours of credit. See your major department for specific requirements.

 

  1. General Education, 98-59.

Mr. Davenport moved and Ms. Riley seconded the motion to reconsider Health and Well-Being. The Council discussed the motion. The motion failed with a vote as follows:

No: Dr. Addison, Dr. Bock, Dr. Methven, Dr. Obia, Dr. Shonk, Dr. Wohlstein

Yes: Mr. Brinkmeyer, Mr. Davenport, Dr. T. Mason, Dr. Owen, Ms. Riley

 

Dr. T. Mason moved and Ms. Riley seconded the motion to define the term "mindful scholarship" in

the Mission Statement. The Council discussed the motion. The motion failed with a vote as follows:

No: Dr. Addison, Dr. Bock, Mr. Brinkmeyer, Dr. T. Mason, Dr. Methven, Dr. Obia,

Dr. Owen,Dr. Wohlstein

Yes: Mr. Davenport, Ms. Riley, Dr. Shonk

 

Dr. Wohlstein moved and Dr. Obia seconded the motion to accept the General Education Package.

The Council discussed the motion. The motion passed with a vote as follows:

 

No: Mr. Brinkmeyer, Mr. Davenport and Ms. Riley

Yes: Dr. Addison, Dr. Bock, Dr. T. Mason, Dr. Methven, Dr. Obia, Dr. Owen,

Dr. Shonk, Dr. Wohlstein
