MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON ACADEMIC AFFAIRS 10-19-00

The October 19, 2000 meeting of the Council on Academic Affairs was held at 2:00 p.m. in the Arcola/Tuscola Room.

The Minutes of October 12, 2000 were approved as written.

II. Communications.

    1. Email (10-11-00) from Barb Kuykendall regarding the Waiver Rules.
    2. 10-10-00 Minutes of Faculty Senate.
    3. Email (10-13-00) from Dr. Prater thanking CAA for allowing FCS to speak on behalf of the nutrition class.
    4. Email (10-16-00) from Dr. Obia regarding Family and Consumer Sciences.

The following courses were proposed as additions to the General Education Program.

III. Revised Course Proposal, FLE 2061G, German Literature in Translation, 98-59-a.

Dr. Canfield presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. Discussion centered on why the department changed this course from a 3000-level course to a 2000-level course. The motion passed with a vote as follows:

Yes: Dr. Bock, Dr. Cosbey, Dr. Dietz, Dr. Kory, Dr. Marlow, Dr. Methven, Ms. Ninness, Dr. Owen, Ms. Rutter, Dr. Shonk, and Dr. Wohlstein.

No: Mr. Brinkmeyer.

This action approves the following to become effective Spring 2001:

FLE 2061G, German Literature in Translation. (3-0-3) F, S or SU. Ger Lit in Trans. This course is designed to introduce students to a representative sample of German literature and literary movements from 1750 to 1950. Prerequisites: ENG 1001G and ENG 1002G. (This course replaces FLE 3061.)

Dr. Canfield presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion passed with a vote as follows:

No: Mr. Brinkmeyer.

This action approves the following to become effective Spring 2001:

FLE 2062G, Hispanic Literature in Translation. (3-0-3) F, S or SU. Hisp Lit in Trans. This course is a survey of representative works of Hispanic Literature in English translation. Prerequisites: ENG 1001G and ENG 1102G. (This course replaces FLE 3062.)

 

 

V. New Course Proposal, FLE 2063G, Francophone Literature in Translation, 98-59-c.

Dr. Canfield presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion passed with vote as follows:

Yes: Dr. Bock, Dr. Cosbey, Dr. Dietz, Dr. Kory, Dr. Marlow, Dr. Methven, Ms. Ninness, Dr. Owen, Ms. Rutter, Dr. Shonk, and Dr. Wohlstein.

No: Mr. Brinkmeyer.

This action approves the following to become effective Spring 2001:

FLE 2063G, Francophone Literature in Translation. (3-0-3) F, S or SU. Frn Lit in Trans. A survey of representative works, literary movements and their cultural implications from Francophone literature around the world presented in English translation. Prerequisites: ENG 1001G and ENG 1002G.

VI. New Course Proposal, MUS 2555G, Interacting with Music, 98-59-d.

Dr. Stoner and Dr. Poulter presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. Dr. Dietz moved and Dr. Bock seconded the motion to move the previous question. The motion passed unanimously. The motion to add MUS 2555G passed with a vote as follows:

Yes: Dr. Bock, Dr. Cosbey, Dr. Dietz, Dr. Kory, Dr. Marlow, Dr. Methven, Ms. Ninness, Dr. Owen, Ms. Rutter, and Dr. Wohlstein.

No: Mr. Brinkmeyer and Dr. Shonk.

This action approves the following to become effective Summer 2001:

MUS 2555 G, Interacting with Music. (3-0-3) F, S. Music Interact. Understanding music for the general student -- listening, responding, and creating music in its cultural context. Prerequisite: Open to Music majors for elective credit only. (This course replaces the current MUS 2555G.)

VII. New Course Proposal, GEL/INT 3300G, Science and Technology; A Promise or Threat?, 98-59-e.

Dr. Baharlou and Dr. Izadi presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion passed unanimously.

This action approves the following to become effective Spring 2001:

GEL/INT 3300 G, Science and Technology-A Promise or a Threat? (3-0-3) F, S, SU. The course will discuss the methods and development of scientific discoveries, their technological applications, and the impact of these activities on cultural, social, political and religious values. The influence of society on scientific research and technological development will be also discussed. Prerequisite: junior standing. (This course replaces the current GEL/INT 3300G.)

  1. New Course Proposal, PED 2700G, Dimensions of Physical Performance to General Education,

98-59-f. Dr. Emmett presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. Dr. Shonk moved and Dr. Dietz seconded the motion to move the previous question. The motion passed unanimously. The motion to add PED 2700G to the General Education package was defeated with a vote as follows:

Yes: Mr. Brinkmeyer, Dr. Dietz, Dr. Kory, Dr. Marlow, Dr. Owen, and Ms. Rutter.

No: Dr. Bock, Dr. Cosbey, Dr. Methven, Ms. Ninness, Dr. Shonk, and Dr. Wohlstein.

IX. New Course Proposal, HST 2600G, Global Health Issues, 98-59-g.

Dr. Doyle, Dr. Woods, and Dr. Bates presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion to add HST 2600G to the General Education package was defeated with a vote as follows:

Yes: Mr. Brinkmeyer, Dr. Dietz, Dr. Kory, Dr. Marlow, Dr. Owen, and Ms. Rutter.

No: Dr. Bock, Dr. Cosbey, Dr. Methven, Ms. Ninness, Dr. Shonk, and Dr. Wohlstein.

X. New Course Proposal, JOU 2001G, Journalism and Democracy, 98-59-h.

Dr. Hyder presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion to add JOU 2001G to the General Education package was defeated with a vote as follows:

Yes: Mr. Brinkmeyer, Dr. Dietz, Dr. Kory, Dr. Marlow, Dr. Owen, and Ms. Rutter.

No: Dr. Bock, Dr. Cosbey, Dr. Methven, Ms. Ninness, Dr. Shonk, and Dr. Wohlstein.

Note: This course will be eliminated from the general education program at the end of the spring semester.
