MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON ACADEMIC AFFAIRS 10-21-99

The October 21, 1999, meeting of the Council on Academic Affairs was held at 2:00 p.m. in the Arcola/Tuscola Room.

The Council discussed the mission statement. The Council agreed that after this meeting, the following CAA Members would meet to amend the proposed mission statement: Addison, Bock, Shonk and Wohlstein. The mission statement will then be attached to the minutes.

1. Dr. Shonk moved and Dr. Methven seconded the motion to delete the word "mindful" in the phrase, "mindful scholarship." The Council discussed the motion.

Mr. Brinkmeyer and Mr. Davenport moved to strike the word "mindful," and replace it with "comprehensive." The motion failed with a vote as follows:

No: Addison, Bock, Cosbey, Davenport, T. Mason, Methven, Obia, Owen, Shonk, Wohlstein.

Yes: Brinkmeyer.

The motion to delete "mindful" failed with a vote as follows:

No: Addison, Bock, Cosbey, Mason, Obia, Owen, Wohlstein.

Yes: Brinkmeyer, Davenport, Methven, Shonk.

2. Dr. T. Mason moved and Dr. Methven seconded the motion to strike the word "global" in the phrase "global citizenship." The Council discussed the motion. The motion failed with a vote as follows:

No: Addison, Bock, Brinkmeyer, Cosbey, Obia, Owen, Wohlstein.

Yes: Davenport, T. Mason, Methven, Shonk.

3. Dr. Shonk moved and Dr. Obia seconded the motion to include the Constitution as a requirement in the Social and Behavioral Sciences segment. The Council discussed the motion. The motion passed with a vote as follows:

Yes: Addison, Brinkmeyer, Cosbey, Davenport, T. Mason, Obia, Shonk, Wohlstein.

No: Bock, Methven, Owen.

    1. Dr. Wohlstein moved and Mr. Davenport seconded the motion to include cultural diversity as a requirement in the general education program. The motion passed with a vote as follows:
    2. Yes: Addison, Bock, Brinkmeyer, Cosbey, Davenport, Mason, Obia, Owen, Riley, Shonk, Wohlstein.

      No: Methven.

    3. Dr. Bock moved and Dr. Obia seconded the motion to change the Scientific Awareness segment to require 7-8 credits. The motion failed with a vote as follows:

      Yes: Addison, Cosbey, Obia, Wohlstein.

    5. Mr. Brinkmeyer moved and Mr. Davenport seconded the motion to change the Scientific Awareness segment to require 8 credits. Motion failed with a vote as follows:
    6. No: Addison, Bock, Cosbey, Davenport, Mason, Methven, Obia, Owen, Riley, Shonk.

      Yes: Brinkmeyer.

    7. Dr. Obia moved and Mr. Davenport seconded the motion to reinstate FCS 2472C, HST 2000C, and PED 2850C to the Social and Behavioral Sciences segment. The motion failed with a vote as follows:

      Yes: Brinkmeyer, T. Mason, Methven, Obia, Owen.

    9. Mr. Davenport moved and Mr. Brinkmeyer seconded the motion to reinstate EDF 2171C to the Social and Behavioral Sciences segment. The motion failed with a vote as follows:

No: Addison, Bock, Cosbey, T. Mason, Methven, Obia, Owen, Shonk, Wohlstein.

Yes: Brinkmeyer, Davenport.
