MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON ACADEMIC AFFAIRS 11-30-00

The November 30, 2000 meeting of the Council on Academic Affairs was held at 2:00 p.m. in the Arcola/Tuscola Room.

Members present: Dr. Bock, Mr. Brinkmeyer, Dr. Cosbey, Dr. Dietz, Dr. Kory, Dr. Marlow, Dr. Methven, Ms. Ninness, Dr. Owen, Ms. Rutter, Dr. Shonk, Dr. Wall, and Dr. Wohlstein.

Staff present: Ms. Herrington-Perry, Academic Affairs.

I. Minutes.

The Minutes of November 16, 2000 were approved with the following addition: Item IX, Dr. Newton Key will represent the Council on Graduate Studies as well as the College of Arts and Humanities.

II. Communications.

      1. Letter (11-28-00) from Provost Wall regarding the effective dates for General Education Course Additions and Elimination.
      2. 10-31-00 and 11-7-00 Minutes of the Council on Graduate Studies.
      3. 11-10-00 Minutes of the College of Sciences Curriculum Committee.
      4. Executive Action (11-14-00) from the College of Sciences Curriculum Committee Meeting.
      5. 11-14-00 Minutes of Faculty Senate.

III. Add to the Agenda:

Mr. Brinkmeyer moved and Dr. Dietz seconded the motion to add the following items to the agenda. Voting will be later.

      1. Revised Course Proposal, EIU 4102G, Technology and Society.
      2. Proposed Revision of the B.S. in Geology
      3. Revised Course Proposal, EIU 4121G, Leisure Time: The American Perspective.
      4. New Course Proposal, EIU 4191G, Leisure Time: The American Perspective, Honors.
      5. Revision of the Manufacturing Technology Option of the B.S. in Industrial Technology.
      6. Proposed Revision to Academic Overloads.
      7. Request to allow 3rd World/Non-Western courses to meet the General Education Cultural Diversity requirement.

IV. New Course Proposal, ART 3400, Art Education for Elementary Schools, 00-41.

Drs. Hild, Belleville, and Harrison presented the course proposal and answered Council members’ questions. The proposal passed unanimously.

This action approves the following to become effective Fall 2002:

ART 3400. Art Education for Elementary Schools. (2-3-3) F. A lecture, discussion, and pre-student teaching experience course designed to present art education students with

concepts, procedures, and experiences used in teaching art activities to children at the elementary level. Students will accrue pre-clinical observation hours. Art 3400 must be taken concurrently with Art 3405. Required for Art Education majors and open to Middle Level Education majors with Field II in Art, and Special Education majors with art area. Prerequisites: Admission to Art Education Program, Teacher Education Program, and Art 2400. (This course will eliminate ART 2410.)

V. New Course Proposal, ART 3405, Art Education for Elementary Schools Studio, 00-42.

Drs. Hild, Belleville, and Harrison presented the course proposal and answered Council members’ questions. The proposal passed unanimously.

This action approves the following to become effective Fall 2002.

ART 3405. Art Education for Elementary Schools Studio. (2-2-2) F. A studio-intensive course to acquaint art education students with appropriate materials, methods, and processes for elementary students. Must be taken concurrently with Art 3400. Required for Art Education majors, and open to Middle Level Education majors with Field II in art, and Special Education majors with art area. Prerequisites: Admission to Art Education Program, Teacher Education Program, and Art 2400. (This course will replace ART 2440 in the Art major.)

VI. New Course Proposal, ART 3415, Art Education for Secondary Schools Studio, 00-43.

Drs. Hild, Belleville, and Harrison presented the course proposal and answered Council members’ questions. The proposal passed unanimously.

This action approves the following to become effective Spring 2003.

ART 3415. Art Education for Secondary Schools Studio. (2-2-2) S. A lecture and studio- intensive course intended to acquaint art education students with secondary level art materials, methods, and processes. ART 3415 must be taken concurrently with ART 3410. Required for Art Education majors, and open to Middle Level Education majors with Field II in art, and Special Education majors with art area. Prerequisites: ART 3400 and ART 3405. Admission to Art Education Program and Teacher Education Program.
