MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON ACADEMIC AFFAIRS 12-2-99
The December 2,1999, meeting of the Council on Academic Affairs was held at 2:00 p.m. in the Arcola/Tuscola Room.
Members present: Dr. Abebe, Dr. Addison, Dr. Bock, Mr. Brinkmeyer, Mr. Davenport,
Dr. T. Mason, Dr. Methven, Dr. Obia, Dr. Owen, Ms. Riley, Dr. Shonk, Dr. Wohlstein.
Members absent: Dr. Cosbey.
Staff present: Mrs. Chancellor, Mrs. Rawlings, Academic Affairs.
Guests Present: N. Isacson, S. Phillps, S. French, S. Canfield, M. May, M. Kelm, and D. Barker.
I. Minutes.
The Minutes of November 18, 1999, were approved as amended. Under III, change the word "and" to to and under VI, Dr. Shonk moved the motion.
II. Correspondence.
Dr. Wohlstein.
Dr. T. Mason moved and Dr. Obia seconded the motion to add the following items to the agenda. Voting will be later.
V. New Course Proposal, FLE 3050, Culture and Language in the French-Speaking World, 99-57.
Dr. S. Canfield and Dr. S. French, Foreign Languages, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council.
The motion to approve the proposal passed unanimously.
This action approves the following to become effective Fall 2000.
FLE 3050, Culture & Language in the French-Speaking World. (3-0-3) On Demand. French Culture. Students will be introduced to French-speaking communities throughout the world. This course will examine the diverse factors throughout history that have created these Francophone communities and some of the contemporary threats to their cohesion and growth. Prerequisites: ENG 1001C and ENG 1002C.

New Course Proposal, FLE 3061, German Literature in Translation, 99-58.Dr. S. Canfield and Dr. S. French, Foreign Languages, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council.
The motion to approve the proposal passed unanimously.
This action approves the following to become effective Spring 2000.
FLE 3061, German Literature in Translation. (3-0-3) On Demand. Ger Lit in Trans. This course is designed to introduce students to a representative sample of German Literature and Literary movements from 1750 to 1950. Prerequisites: ENG 1001C and ENG 1002C.

This action approves the following to become effective Spring 2001.
FLF 3220, French for Business. (3-2-3) On Demand. Business French. This course is an integrated, applied language program that targets business and technology from an everyday life perspective. All four language skills are stressed (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) within an authentic matrix of French and francophone culture. Prerequisite: FLF 2202 or the equivalent.
VIII. New Course Proposal, FLE 3000, Media and Global Communication, 99-60.
Dr. S. Canfield and Dr. S. French, Foreign Languages, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council.
The motion to approve the proposal passed unanimously.
This action approves the following to become effective Spring 2000.
FLE 3000, Media and Global Communication. (3-2-3) On Demand. Global Media.Com. Students will be introduced to a wide variety of global electronic media including the World Wide Web. In addition to learning basic research and navigational skills, students will create a multimedia presentation, a training program, or a web-site as part of their department portfolio. Prerequisites: ENG 1001C and ENG 1002C. Three years of high school language (or concurrent enrollment in 2201 or above).
