MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON ACADEMIC AFFAIRS 3-9-00
The March 9, 2000 meeting of the Council on Academic Affairs was held at 2:00 p.m. in the Arcola/Tuscola Room.
Members present: Dr. Addison, Dr. Bock, Mr. Brinkmeyer, Dr. Cosbey, Dr. T. Mason,
Dr. Methven, Ms. McDermott, Dr. Obia, Dr. Owen, Ms. Rutter,

I. Minutes.
The Minutes of March 2, 2000 were approved as approved.
The Council decided to change the order of the Agenda to accommodate the guests.
III. New Course Proposal, ENG 3705, American Multicultural Literatures, 00-07.
Dr. Ringuette and Dr. Boswell, English, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion passed unanimously.
This action approves the following to become effective Spring 2001.
ENG 3705, American Multicultural Literatures. (3-0-3) S. Am Mult Lit. A study of American multicultural literatures from 1700 to the present, featuring African-American, Asian-American, Native-American, Latino/a writers, and immigrant American writers, with emphasis on race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality. (Group 2). Prerequisites: ENG 1001G, ENG 1002G.
IV. Proposed Revision of CDS Honors Program, 00-11.
Dr. Hanner, Communication Disorders & Sciences, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion passed unanimously.
This action approves the following to become effective immediately.
Honors Program in Communication Disorders & Sciences
Eligibility
Admission to the Department Honors Program in Communication Disorders & Sciences requires a miminum 3.50 (4.0 scale) cumulative GPA and approval of the Department Honors Admission Committee. Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 (4.0 scale) to continue in the Honors Program. Honors courses will replace required and elective courses in the CDS curriculum. Admission will be limited to availability of program resources.
Department Honors Requirements
CDS Honors students will complete all of the requirements for the major with following substitutions:
Communication Disorders & Sciences 4666 3 sem. Hrs.
Honors Seminar
Communication Disorders & Sciences 5000 3 sem. Hrs.
Introduction to Graduate School**
Communication Disorders & Sciences 4644 6 sem. Hrs.
Honors Thesis
Total 12 sem. Hrs.
**CDS 4670 and CDS 4770 are part of the regular undergraduate curriculum in CDS. Honors students may substitute honors courses for one of these courses in their undergraduate program. CDS 4670 or CDS 4770 may be taken for graduate credit during graduate school.
Communication Disorders & Sciences Course Descriptions
CDS 4666 Honors Seminar (Arr-Arr-3) On Demand. Honors Seminar. Reading and discussion of original research projects in speech, language, or hearing science. Attendance at presentations of original research. Prerequisite: Admission to the Department Honors Program in Communication Disorders & Sciences and permission of the Department Honors Coordinator and Department Chair.
CDS 4644 Honors Thesis (Arr-Arr-3). Honors Thesis. (Replaces 6 sh of electives) (May be repeated to a maximum of 6 semester hours). Original research in speech, language, or hearing science. A written report and oral presentation is required. Prerequisite: Admission to the Department Honors Program in Communication Disorders & Sciences and permission of the Department Honors Coordinator and Department Chair.
CDS 5000 Introduction to Graduate Study. (3-0-3) F. (For CDS honors students this course may be taken for undergraduate credit and replace 3 sh of electives or CDS 4670 or CDS 4770). Introduction to descriptive and experimental research designs in the field of communication disorders and sciences. Prerequisite: CDS 4666, Admission to the Department Honors Program in Communication Disorders & Sciences and permission of the Department Honors Coordinator, Department Chair, and Dean of the Graduate School.
Ms. McDermott exited the meeting at this point.
V. New Course Proposal, EIU 1111, University Foundations, 00-10.
Ms. Drake and Mr. M. May, Health Services and Academic Advising, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council. The motion to approve the proposal passed with the vote as follows:
Yes: Dr. Addison, Mr. Brinkmeyer, Dr. Cosbey, Dr. T. Mason,
Dr. Methven, Ms. McDermott, Dr. Obia, Dr. Owen, Ms. Rutter,

Explanation of vote from Dr. Bock:
I agree that the material covered in this course is important for students to know. However, I do not feel that college credit should be given for these kinds of activities. Academic rigor is missing from this course, and there are better ways of getting this information to students.
This action approves the following to become effective Fall 2000.
EIU 1111, University Foundations. (2-0-2) F. UNIV FOUND. An inquiry into university traditions, resources, expectations, and controversies. Students are challenged to reflect upon and to more fully appreciate their intellectual potential, their diversity, and their moral responsibilities in a framework that develops critical thinking, learning and communication skills. An experiential learning component engages students in the scholarly community. Prerequisite: First year student standing (fewer than 30 semester hours of earned credit). This course may not be taken credit/no credit.

Renumber SPC 4760 - Theories of Human Communication - to SPC 4740. The purpose is to make the course strictly an undergraduate class.
GEL 4335 -- Change prerequisite from "GEL 3425" to GEL/ESC 1300G, CHM 1410 (or CHM 1510), MAT 1330 (or MAT 1400), or permission of the instructor. Upper class standing is highly recommended."
PSY 3810 -- Delete course from the curriculum.
PSY 3930 -- Delete course from the curriculum.
PSY 2000 -- Delete course from the curriculum.
PSY 3900 -- Change last statement in course description from "Limited to six hours" to "A maximum of nine semester hours may be earned in this course. A maximum of three hours may be applied to the major in psychology."
