MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON TEACHER EDUCATION
February 24, 1998
The Council on Teacher Education met at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24, 1998, in the Arcola/Tuscola Room of the MLK Union.
Members present: Dr. Barnhart, Dr. Campanis, Mr. Consolino, Dr. L. Greathouse, Dr. N. Greathouse, Dr. Henn, Ms. Hooser, Dr. Hussey, Dr. McGaughey, Ms. S. Rippon, Dr. Schroeder, Ms. Traub.
Members absent: Dr. Cosbey, Dean Hitch, Dr. Poulter.
Staff present: Ms. Dolson, Dr. Evans, Ms. Herrington-Perry, Academic Affairs.
Guests present: Dr. M.E. Varble, Ms. E. Witsman.
I. Chair N. Greathouse introduced the new student member, Ms. Sandy Rippon.
II. Minutes.
Ms. Hooser moved and Dr. L. Greathouse seconded the motion to approve the Minutes of the February 19, 1998, meeting as published. The motion passed unanimously.
III. Communications.
1. Chair N. Greathouse reported that the search committee for Provost and VPAA had completed the on-campus interviews. A list of strengths and concerns associated with each candidate will be forwarded to President Jorns for his decision.
2. Chair N. Greathouse reported that Dr. Coddington talked with her regarding a concern he had with a student appeal and that she had explained the Council’s decision.
IV. 98-1 Student Appeals (SA05 & SA06).
Dr. McGaughey moved and Dr. Schroeder seconded the motion to add these items to the agenda. Voting will be later.
V. 98-3 Revision of COTE Bylaws.
Dr. Campanis moved and Dr. Schroeder seconded the motion to add this item to the agenda. Voting will be later.
VI. 98-2 Catalog Clarification.
The Council discussed the catalog clarification. The addition will be added to the catalog under University Approval to Student Teach (current catalog page 80). The motion to approve the addition passed unanimously.
Every student planning to student teach must formally apply at the Application to Student Teach Meeting (announced by the Office of Student Teaching). This Meeting is held during the Fall semester preceding the academic year in which the student plans to student teach. All application materials received at that meeting must be completed and turned in to the Office of Student Teaching, 2418 Buzzard Hall, by the announced deadline date. Failure to attend a meeting to apply to student teach or failure to complete the application materials by the deadline will result in a minimum of a one-year delay in student teaching.
VII. The new Selection Process for Undergraduate Teacher Education was discussed. Dr. Mary Ellen Varble was present to respond to concerns of the Council. Dr. Varble stated that subsequent questions should be directed to the Dean’s Office.
