MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON TEACHER EDUCATION

March 10, 1998

 

The Council on Teacher Education met at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, 1998, in the Schahrer Room of the MLK Union.

 

Members present: Dr. Campanis, Mr. Consolino, Dr. Cosbey, Dr. L. Greathouse, Dr. N. Greathouse, Dean Hitch, Ms. Hooser, Dr. McGaughey, Dr. Poulter, Ms. S. Rippon, Dr. Schroeder, Ms. Traub.

Members absent: Dr. Barnhart, Dr. Henn, Dr. Hussey.

Staff present: Ms. Dolson, Academic Affairs.

Guests present: Ms. M. Kelm.

 

I. Minutes.

Ms. Rippon moved and Mr. Consolino seconded the motion to approve the Minutes of the February 24, 1998, meeting as published. The motion passed unanimously.

 

II. Communications.

1. Chair Greathouse announced the recommendations of the search committee for the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs have been forwarded to the President.

2. Council elections will be held March 25 and 26. The following faculty have been nominated to serve on COTE: Richard Sylvia, associate professor of English; Michelle Olsen, assistant professor of early childhood, elementary and middle-level education; Audrey Edwards, professor of secondary education and foundations and a write-in candidate, Patricia Poulter, assistant professor of Music.

 

III. 98-4 Revision to the Early Childhood & Elementary Education Majors.

Dr. McGaughey moved and Dr. Campanis seconded the motion to add this item to the agenda. Voting will take place later.

 

IV. 98-5 New Program Proposal, M.S. in Natural Sciences.

Dr. McGaughey moved and Dr. Poulter seconded the motion to add this item to the agenda. Discussion and voting will be April 14, 1998.

 

V. 98-6 Revised Program, M.S. Ed. in Guidance and Counseling.

Ms. Hooser moved and Dr. Campanis seconded the motion to add these items to the agenda.

Discussion and voting will be April 14, 1998.

 

VI. 98-1 Student Appeals (SA 05 & SA 06)

SA05: Dr. McGaughey moved and Dr. L. Greathouse seconded the motion to support the subcommittee’s recommendation to deny the appeal to allow the student to waive the requirements for approval to student teach.

 

SA06: Dr. L. Greathouse moved and Mr. Consolino seconded the motion to support the subcommittee’s recommendation to grant the appeal to allow the student to waive the requirements for approval to student teach.

 

VII. 98-3 Revision of COTE Bylaws.

Chair Greathouse distributed a revised version of the bylaws for the Council’s review. This will be discussed at a future meeting.

 

VIII. Executive Director’s Report:

Dean Hitch will appoint the Advisory Committee to Monitor the Teacher Selection Process after the election of the new COTE members on March 25 and 26.
