MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON TEACHER EDUCATION

April 28, 1998

 

The Council on Teacher Education met at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 1998, in the Arcola/Tuscola Room of the MLK Union.

 

Members present: Dr. Campanis, Mr. Consolino, Dr. Cosbey, Dr. L. Greathouse, Dr. N. Greathouse, Dr. Henn, Dean Hitch, Ms. Hooser, Dr. Hussey, Dr. McGaughey, Dr. Poulter, Ms. Rippon, Dr. Schroeder, Ms. Traub.

Member absent: Dr. Barnhart.

Staff present: Ms. Dolson, Ms. Herrington-Perry, Academic Affairs.

Guests present: Dr. C. Helwig, Ms. M. Manchester, Dr. B Reid. 

I. Minutes.

Dr. McGaughey moved and Dr. L. Greathouse seconded the motion to approve the Minutes of the April 14, 1998, meeting as published. The motion to approve the Minutes passed. 

II. Communications.

1. Memo (4-23-98) from President Jorns approving the COTE bylaws. 

III. Summer Meeting.

Chair Greathouse asked for the Council members’ summer schedules since the Council will need to schedule a meeting during the summer. 

IV. 98-1 Student Appeals (SA07).

Dr. Poulter moved and Ms. Traub seconded the motion to support the subcommittee’s recommendation to grant the appeal to allow the student to waive the requirements for approval to student teach. (This does not guarantee the student placement in the Spring 1999 semester.) 

V. 98-7 Revision to the Early Childhood & Middle Level Education Majors (catalog description of lab hours).

The Council agreed by consensus to postpone this item until the summer meeting. 

VI. Executive Director’s Report.

1. Dr. Brian Reid presented an update on the Professional Development Schools program. He encouraged feedback from the Council.

2. Dean Hitch will distribute copies of a letter regarding the recommendations of the Illinois Policy Group on Teacher Policy. These recommendations have been made to the Governor and include comments related to higher education's role in teacher preparation and professional development. 

VII. Election of Officers.

Chair: Dr. Campanis nominated Dr. McGaughey. Dr. Henn nominated Ms. Hooser. Dr. Campanis moved and Mr. Consolino seconded the motion to close the nominations. The motion passed. Dr. McGaughey was elected by a secret ballot vote. 

Vice Chair: Dr. Campanis nominated Ms. Hooser. Hearing no other nominations, Chair Greathouse closed the nominations. Ms. Hooser was elected by acclamation.
