MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON TEACHER EDUCATION

January 12, 1999

The Council on Teacher Education met at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12, 1999, in the Arcola/Tuscola Room of the MLK Union.

Members present: Dr. Campanis, Dr. Cosbey, Dr. Edwards, Dean Hitch, Ms. Hooser, Dr. Hussey, Ms. Lehman, Dr. Luft, Dr. McGaughey, Dr. Olsen, Dr. Sylvia, Ms. Traub, Dr. D. Wolf.

Member absent: Mr. Consolino, Dr. Poulter.

Staff present: Ms. Dolson, Ms. Herrington-Perry, Academic Affairs.

Guests present: Dr. D. Bower.

I. Minutes.

The Minutes of December 8, 1998, were approved as published.

II. Communications:

    1. CAA Minutes from 12/3/98.
    2. LCBAS Curriculum Committee Minutes from 12/11/98.
    3. CEPS Curriculum Committee Minutes from 12/14/98.
    4. Executive Action (12-14-98).
    5. Letter (12-17-98) from Wendy Walters (student). It was suggested from some members of the Council that all EIU teacher education advisors have a current copy of the student teaching handbook and that it reference the requirement of four visits from the teaching coordinator per semester.

III. 99-1 Health Studies Minor with Teacher Certification, Revision.

Dr. Campanis moved and Dr. Edwards seconded the motion to put this item on the agenda. Voting and discussion will take place later.

IV. Executive Director's Report:

    1. Dean Hitch mentioned to the Council that the legislature is still considering how the program approval process will be defined and how professional development of teachers will relate to the new certification system.
    2. The new teacher certification system went into effect January 1, 1999. The Dean's office worked diligently to send out the required information to the students prior to that deadline so they could register with the regional school offices.
    3. The NCATE review originally scheduled for Fall 2000 has been rescheduled for Fall 2001.
