MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON TEACHER EDUCATION

January 26, 1999

The Council on Teacher Education met at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 26, 1999, in the Arcola/Tuscola Room of the MLK Union.

Members present: Dr. Campanis, Dr. Edwards, Dean Hitch, Ms. Hooser, Dr. Hussey, Dr. Luft, Dr. McGaughey, Dr. Olsen, Dr. Sylvia, Ms. Traub, Dr. D. Wolf.

Members absent: Dr. Cosbey, Ms. Lehman, Dr. Poulter.

Staff present: Ms. Dolson, Academic Affairs.

Guests present: Dr. R. Bates, Dr. D. Bower, Mr. R. Cavanaugh, Dr. N. Key, Dr. B. Reid, Dr. R. Roberts.

I. Minutes.

The Minutes of January 12, 1999, were approved as published.

II. Communications:

    III. 99-2 History Major with Teacher Certification, Revision.

    99-3 Counseling and Student Development, School Counseling Concentration, Revision.

    Dr. Edwards moved and Dr. Luft seconded the motion to put these items on the agenda and suspend the rules to discuss these items. The motion to put these items on the agenda and suspend the rules passed with the following vote:

    Yes: Dr. Campanis, Dr. Edwards, Ms. Hooser, Dr. Hussey, Dr. Luft, Dr. McGaughey, Dr. Olsen, Ms. Traub, Dr. Wolf.

    No: Dr. Sylvia.

    IV. 99-2 History Major with Teacher Certification, Revision.

    Dr. Newton Key, History, presented the revision and answered questions of the Council. Dr. Luft moved and Dr. Campanis seconded the motion to postpone this item until the next meeting in order to see the revised catalog copy. The motion to postpone passed unanimously.

    V. 99-1 Health Studies Minor with Teacher Certification, Revision.

    Mr. Cavanaugh and Dr. Robert Bates, Health Studies, presented the revision and answered questions of the Council. Dr. Luft moved and Dr. Edwards seconded the motion to amend the revision. The amended revision passed unanimously.

    This action approves the following to become effective Fall 1999:

    Minor in Health Studies for Teacher Certification

    Health Studies 2000C, 2250, 2270, 3200, 3400, 3500, 4800 19 18 sem. hrs.

    Five to Six semester hours taken from two or more

    of the following areas 5 or 6 sem. hrs.

    IV. Executive Director's Report:

      1. Dean Hitch mentioned that there is a bill awaiting the governor's signature that would extend the beginning date of the new certification system to July 1, 1999. If the bill is signed, the old certification system would be extended until that date.
      2. The program approval process is still uncertain.
      3. The Selection Process Committee will meet in late February or early March to review the selection pool.
      4. A discussion group of Chairs and Teacher Educators will be held February 10, at 3 p.m. in the Casey Room.
