Minutes of the Council on Teacher Education – September 28, 1999

The Council on Teacher Education met at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 28 in the Arcola-Tuscola Room of the MLK University Union.

Members present: Dr. K. Bower, Dr. Campanis, Dr. Edwards, Dr. Greathouse, Dr. Hooser, Dr. Hussey, Dr. Olsen, Dr. Poulter, Ms. Traub, Ms. Sudduth, Dr. Sylvia, Dr. Wolf, Dean Hitch.

Staff present: Dr. Bower --CEPS, Ms. Herrington-Perry -- Academic Affairs

Guests present: Ms. Debbie Kidwell

  1. Minutes.

    2. The Minutes of September 14 were amended to reflect the correct starting time (2:00) under the ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEXT MEETING. The minutes were approved as amended.

  2. Communications.

    3. Dr. Hooser reported on the Student Appeals Subcommittee’s decision against rehearing SA4. The subcommittee found no new evidence on which to base a rehearing.

  3. 99-4 Student Appeals (SA12, SA13, SA14)
    1. SA12 - Dr. Edwards moved and Dr. Wolf seconded the motion to support the subcommittee’s recommendation to deny the appeal. The motion to deny the appeal passed unanimously.
    2. SA13 – Dr. Greathouse moved and Dr. Wolf seconded the motion to accept the subcommittee’s recommendation to grant the appeal. The motion to grant the appeal passed unanimously.
    3. SA14 – Dr. Olsen moved and Dr. Greathouse seconded the motion to accept the subcommittee’s recommendation to grant the appeal. The motion to grant the appeal passed unanimously.

IV. 99-11 Program Revision for SPE and EC/ELE/MLE Majors – Substitution of STG 4000 for STG 3000

Dr. Sylvia moved and Dr. K. Bower seconded the motion to put this item on the agenda. Voting and

discussion will be later.

V. Executive Director’s Report

    1. Preparations are underway for the NCATE/ISBE visit scheduled for Fall 2001. As part of that preparation, meetings are being scheduled to discuss the new performance outcomes based standards. The first of these meetings is scheduled for Friday, October 1 from 8-10 in the Arcola/Tuscola Room. Every department with Teacher Certification programs should attempt to send at least one representative.
    2. The Chairs and Teacher Educators Group is scheduled to meet on October 19 beginning at 1:30 in the Effingham Room. All faculty and administrators involved in teacher education are encouraged to attend. For more information contact Dr. Doug Bower.
    3. Effective October 1 there will be a change in the Department of Student Teaching with Dr. Kathlene Shank assuming the role of Acting Chair.
