Minutes of the Council on Teacher Education – February 8, 2000

The Council on Teacher Education met at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 8, 2000, in the Arcola-Tuscola Room of the MLK University Union.

Members present: Dr. K. Bower, Dr. Campanis, Dr. Edwards, Dr. L. Greathouse, Dean Hitch, Dr. Hooser, Dr. Hussey, Ms. Karwoski, Dr. Olsen, Dr. Poulter, Ms. Traub, Dr. Sylvia, Dr. Wolf.

Staff present: Dr. D. Bower, CEPS; Mrs. Chancellor and Ms. Herrington-Perry, Academic Affairs.

Guests present: L. Butler and R. Luft.

  2. The Minutes of January 25, 2000, were approved.

  3. Announcements.

1. Illinois Content Standardards are available for comment . Please review them on the ISBE website at:

www.isbe.state.il.us/profdevelopment/standardsltr.htm.

    1. Patty Poulter and Christy Hooser will serve on the planning committee for the Teacher Quality Forum.

Dr. Hooser requested that the Council suspend the rules and act on 99-18 today.

Dr. Greathouse moved and Dr. Olsen seconded the motion. This motion passed unanimously.

  1. 99-18 Merger of Business Education, Family Consumer Sciences, and Technical Education.

Dr. Butler, Technology, presented the proposal and answered questions of the Council.

The motion passed with a vote as follows:

Yes: Dr. K. Bower, Dr. Campanis, Dr. Edwards, Dr. L. Greathouse, Dr. Hooser, Dr. Hussey, Ms. Karwoski, Dr. Olsen, Dr. Poulter, Ms. Traub, Dr. Wolf.

Abstain: Dr. Sylvia.

This action will eliminate the current Teacher Certification options and minor in Business Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Technology. The new program and minor will become effective Fall 2000, pending IBHE approval.

Career and Technical Education Major

1. General Education—47-48 semester hours

ENG 1001G-3, ENG 1002G-3, SPC 1310G-3 Must have a grade of C or better in each course.

Humanities and Fine Arts-9

Social and Behavioral Sciences-9 Must have a US Constitution Course

Scientific Awareness-9 Biological-a minimum of 3, Physical-a minimum of 3, Elective to complete 9 hours Must include one lab course.

Mathematics-3 (Business Education students must take MAT 2250G-4) Must have a grade of C or better.

    1. Post Baccalaureate Process for Calculating and Using GPAs for Selection.

COTE will sponsor discussion at the March 7 meeting, regarding the post baccalaureate selection process.

Executive Director's Report:

    1. Changes in General Education program. Departments with questions about revising catalog copy pertaining to professional education programs should contact the Dean's office.

2. Teacher Education Forums.

Forum on Teacher Quality

Time and place will be announced at a later date.

Integrating Technology in the Classroom

March 2, 5p.m. in the Charleston/Mattoon Room

Design of Professional Education Inservice, with forums on assessment (using rubrics and portfolios)

and clinical experience.

March 3, 8a.m.-12p.m. in the Arcola/Tuscola Room
