MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON TEACHER EDUCATION 4-11-00

The Council on Teacher Education met at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11, 2000, in the Arcola/Tuscola Room.

Members present: Dr. K. Bower, Dr. Campanis, Dr. Edwards, Dr. L. Greathouse, Dean Hitch,

Dr. Hooser, Dr. Hussey, Ms. Karwoski, Dr. Poulter, Dr. Sylvia, Ms. Traub,

and Dr. Wolf.

Member absent: Dr. Olsen.

Staff present: Mrs. Chancellor, Academic Affairs.

Guests Present: L. Anderson and K. Dailey.

I. Minutes.

The Minutes of March 28, 2000 were approved as corrected. Under the Members present,

Dr. K Bower and Dr. Hussey were absent.

  1. Announcements.

A parent spoke to the Council regarding his concerns with the selection process for the Teacher Education Program.

III. 99-17 Post Baccalaureate Process for Calculating and Using GPAs for Selection.

The Council discussed the Alternative Option to the Language of 99-17. Dr. Greathouse moved and Dr. Edwards seconded the motion to amend 99-17. The motion to approve the proposal as amended passed with a vote as follows:

Yes: Dr. K. Bower, Dr. Campanis, Dr. Edwards, Dr. L. Greathouse,

Dr. Hussey, Dr. Poulter, and Dr. Wolf.

No: Dr. Hooser, Ms. Karwoski, Dr. Sylvia and Ms. Traub.

This action approves the following to become effective Fall 2000.

"A post-baccalaureate student may use the graduate GPA for purposes of selection if the student has successfully completed a master's degree program."(The student has the responsibility of notifying the dean's office and furnishing evidence of the graduate GPA.)

The appeals decisions of the Council on Teacher Education are final."

"Through the Council on Teacher Education, post-baccalaureate student may appeal the use of the undergraduate GPA and request the use of an alternative GPA for purposes of selection if the student:

Completed the baccalaureate degree five years ago or more, has evidence of successful work experience since completion of the baccalaureate degree, and has evidence of 12 semester hours of post-baccalaureate course work relevant to teaching certification at a 3.0 GPA level or above.

The appeals decisions of the Council on Teacher Education are final."
