MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL ON TEACHER EDUCATION 9-12-00

The Council on Teacher Education met at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2000, in the Arcola/Tuscola Room.

Members present: Dr. K. Bower, Dr. Campanis, Ms. Eckroth, Dr. Edwards, Dr. L. Greathouse, Dean Hitch, Dr. Hooser, Dr. Hussey, Dr. McNitt, Ms. Nelson, Dr. Olsen, Ms. Traub, and Dr. Wolf.

Members absent: Dr. Poulter and Dr. Sylvia.

Staff present: M. Herrington-Perry and Mrs. Chancellor, Academic Affairs.

Guests present: D. Hershberger-Kidwell and D. Bower.

  1. Introduction of New Members:

Ms. Eckroth - Student Member.

Dr. McNitt - Political Science.

Ms. Nelson - Student Member.

II. Minutes.

The Minutes of April 25, 2000 were approved as written.

  1. Announcements.
    1. The chair requested members of COTE to serve on two committees.
    2. Dr. L. Campanis agreed to serve on the EMC.

      Dr. Campanis, Dr. Hooser, Dr. Hussey, Dr. McNitt, and Dr. Sylvia agreed to serve on the SA subcommittee.

    3. Dean Hitch provided an overview of an interdisciplinary master's degree program intended to increase the number of NBPTS prepared teachers in Illinois. This is a program for those teachers who want to go that extra mile and become a "Board Certified Teacher." The proposal is still being developed.
    1. Dr. Greathouse reported on the upcoming dessert reception and meeting about the $27,000 of professional development money received from ISBE. All teacher/counselor/administrator educators are invited to attend. The purpose of the money is to integrate Education to Careers in all education classes where appropriate. The meeting will be held in the Old Ballroom on September 29, from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. Anyone wanting to attend should notify Dr. Greathouse.
    1. Upcoming: Stockman Institute Conference will be held in the Grand Ballroom on October 6, 2000. The topic will be "It Takes a Village…School Violence Prevention." For more information contact the College of Education and Professional Studies.
    2. There are upcoming certificate changes. The web address for the content area standards is:

These content area standards will become the basis for teacher certification in the state beginning in July 2003. Teacher Education institutions must redesign their programs to meet these new standards.

  1. Executive Director's Report.

An inservice workshop on the Design for Professional Education will be offered in the Charleston/Mattoon Room, on September 29, at 8:00 a.m.
