Purpose

LASO serves as a social base for Latino students on EIU's campus. Members work to (1) increase the campus participation of Latino students, (2) increase opportunities for Latino representation and influence, and (3) promote cultural awareness.

The purpose of LASO varies from one member to another. For Latino students it serves as an academic and social environment

For members of non-Latino decent, it can be an opportunity to learn about the splendor of the many cultures underneath the banner of LASO.

For all, LASO is an opportunity to celebrate and enjoy the culture and excitement of Latino Heritage!

Leadership Opportunities

LASO is a great organization that provides opportunities to develop leadership skills either by serving as an Executive Board member (i.e., President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Historian) or by Chairing one of many interest based committees (e.g., fundraising, culture corner, scholarship).

Many members attend the National and Midwest Conferences of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute and the VALE student conference at Northern Illinois University.

Sponsored Events

LASO regularly sponsors and participates in many campus and community events such as EIU Homecoming, the Latin Heritage Celebration, and Latin Culture Corner.

Members also sponsor a Natural Ties person, various charities (e.g., Mexico Relief Effort), and perform many volunteer services (e.g., election poles, blood drives).

Joining

LASO is an ethnic and culturally diverse organization which is open to all Eastern Illinois University students, not only students of Latino and Hispanic backgrounds. All students are welcome to attend any meeting, function, or event.

We meet every week during the regular academic year at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Union at EIU or the Cultural Center. Check the Campus Clips section of the Daily Eastern News for location and changes in meeting times or call: Dr. Cari Brito, Faculty Advisor, at (217) 581-2219 or Isabel Castro, Co-Advisor, at (217) 581-7401.

Membership is only $15 for the year, or $10 for one semester.

Come and join LASO and take advantage of all the leadership opportunities we have to offer as well as the fun. Be a part of a year long FIESTA!
