County Treasurer of Coles County, Illinois, being duly sworn on oath says, was
in the Treasurers office opposite the north door of the of the Court House in
Charleston on Monday 28th March 1864, between 2 & 3 O’clock P.M. Heard
firing of pistols west side of Court House and after first volley went to the
door and saw a crowd west side of Court House; also a crowd near Judge Edwards
office east side of Court House – saw men in both crowds firing at soldiers
who were passing out from north Court House door – saw one pursuing a
soldier snapping a pistol at him – saw some seven to ten shots fired at
soldiers – saw not firing at anyone but soldiers - saw a number of those
who had been shooting and others start to the east side of Town. Was not acquainted
