Samuel W.W. Goodrich living in Charleston, Being duly sworn deposeth and saith
that the first I saw was down at Chambers corner where I heard Oliver Sallee
say that the soldiers could whip any of the butternuts if that was what they
come for if they would just go out side of the Town this was Early in the morning
of Monday the 28th of March 1864 in Charleston Coles County Ill. -- the next
I heard Elsberry Hanks say that they the butternuts would make them sup sorrow
(meaning the soldiers) before we leave town – I saw not more until I heard
the fireing I should think about three oclock P.M. of said day I saw Bill Hart
fall don’t know who shot him I saw Tom Jeffries fall, I saw one of the
soldiers running Round a tree he fell & came away limping I saw a fellow
with a Brick bat – this is all I can state of much pertinence to the occasion
Except, what my son stated on his dying bed, all the time after he was shot
& up to the moment almost of his death he said that Nelson Wells shot him
the first time, then John OHair shot him twice - - He was shot in the evening
and died next day at 11 oclock A.M. - I saw a great deal of shooting but could
not Identify the persons My son was perfectly in his senses till he died Further
