1999-2000 Exhibit Gallery & Acknowledgments

Section 1, "Old Main: The Beginning."

Section 2, "A Building for the Ages."
The case contains items from the building's original time capsule and the enlarged photograph is of the construction of Old Main (ca. 1899, Coles County Historical Society).  In front of the image is a box of light fixtures that were never installed and foundation stones for Old Main.

Looking through the entrance.  On the opposite wall is an enlarged postcard (ca. 1900, from the collection of William Smith) of the central hallway in Old Main.

Door, frame, and transum taken from Old Main (ca. 1899, EIU Property Control).  The door and transum stand aproximately twelve feet in height.

Erin leans forward to position a baseball in just the right place.  In the case are examples of women's and men's gym uniforms that Eastern students have used over the years.

Andy and Ryan take measurements so they can  hang an elevation of Old Main in section 2, "Old Main: A Building for the Ages."

Livingston C. Lord's desk and chair (ca. 1900).  The radiator, book shelves, lamp, and wainscoting all came from various parts of Old Main.  The photographs on the wall include the first graduating class and the first EIU faculty.  There is also a diploma.

Section 3, "Charleston: The Normal School City."

Debra Reid helps by touching up pedestals with a bit of paint.
On the pedistal are examples of late 19th century women's clothing.  Scattered on tables are artifacts which will eventually be displayed in the exhibit.

The time line in Section 4 follows the construction of the different buildings on campus.

Items from Pemberton Hall: an armchair (EIU Facilities, Planning, & Management) and an RCA Victrola Record Player and Radio (EIU Property Control).  Also shown is a women's cotton nightgown (SIUC Historic Costume Collection, Development, Southern Illinois Unversity-Carbondale).

Section 4, "The Campus: Changing Landscape."
Class pictures and building elevations help tell the story of EIU's buildings.  Displayed on the pedestals are copies of early editions of the Warbler.

Section 5, "A Future for the Past."

After hard construction work the exhibit is finally done
and the H.A. class toasts their success with a little sparkling pear juice.
