Street Fairs
Between
1897 and 1902, Mattoon hosted hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
In 1897, the Mattoon Free Street Fair Company was formed and stocks sold
within 48 hours. The Fair was an immediate success, with exhibits
stretching for 12 blocks. The community was entertained with band
concerts, stage shows, amusement rides, trick bicycle riders, balloon
ascensions, trapeze artists, freak shows, and horse races. Businesses
also opened booths to provide food and crafts. Below are views from
the 1898 and 1900 Street Fairs.
