Nutrition for the Addicted Person
Spring 2009
Course Assignments
All students will develop a resource file of alcohol-related resources. This file must contain at least 25 different resources, including but not limited to pamphlets, brochures, review and research articles, and web sites. Each resource must be accompanied with an annotation (summary) of the use, including the source of the resource (ie the contact information for ordering more), a well-formed paragraph describing the content, and appropriate target audience. Be sure to include a variety of resources in terms of type of resource (brochure, pamphlet, website, research article) and/or target audience (children, pregnant women, older adults, college-age). An overall reflection of the activity (ie what you learned from completing the assignment) needs to be included. No more than five (5) resources from this class may be included in your file. The resource file will be evaluated using this grading guide.
All students will write a reflective narrative after the Hour House on the various professionals' roles in the treatment of addiction. This will be due at the close of class on Saturday.
All students will complete various in-class activities.
For graduate credit, graduate students must complete both of the following:
Complete one of the online mini courses at http://pathwayscourses.samhsa.gov/index.htm that are approved for CEU credit. You will need to register online (no cost) and select the "Other" organization. You will need to print off your completed scored quizzes AND type a one page reflection of what you learned from the online course.
AND
Write a referenced essay (maximum of three pages with a minimum of 5 credible references) on a topic in which you need further clarification. You must use APA format for all citation and referencing. Your thesis statement needs to reflect the item/concept that you didn't understand fully, and then, the body of your essay needs to include information that helped you to better understand the topic. You might also select a topic that wasn't covered in class, but is related to alcohol and nutrition. The essay will be evaluated based on the criteria listed in this grading guide. This can be submitted via email to Dr. Burns (mdburns@eiu.edu) as a Word document or in person no later than 2 pm on March 27, 2009.
