In case you have NOT received it, the following is a copy of the message. If you have not received the email from listserv, oracle, that means you are not on the listserv and you will need to subscribe to it. We have successfully completed week 1 for our course. I like to commend for everyone's hard work and active participation. For the upcoming week, I like to remind everyone of the following: 1. In general, I will try to lock our discussion board for the past week, on every Monday morning. I will then also unlock the discussion for the week. (This week is an exception since we have a holiday. Every Monday, I have a research group meeting at 8:30 AM. I will try to work at the course soon after the research meeting.) 2. For this week's discussion, please make sure to follow the discussion guidelines, including the requirement of being humorous. 3. For the course readings, please understand that all required readings are posted on the course web site. The book you received will serve as a reference. 4. The text on the course site was developed for Oracle8i. I tested most of them which also worked for Oracle9i. I intend to update the course materials as we proceed each week. Thus, if you like to print the materials, please wait until we reach the week. Please also understand that it is impossible to match every changes on software since updates are being done constantly. 5. I intend to communicate with everyone in the class through the listserv. Have fun. ------------------------------------------------------------ Message no. 5829[Branch from no. 2821] Posted by Rohini Shrestha (rshrestha) on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 7:23pm Subject: Re: Post your problems or questions here Can we install oracle from a CD that is provided with a book? I am not sure about XP home edition. About the partitioning, I think that it is always safe to partition the drive. However, if you have installed a lot of softwares on the main drive (say, C drive), it would be a lot of work to reinstall them again since partitioning would most likely need formatting of the drives. I did not partition my main drive when I installed Oracle10g. However I have to say that my system has become slower since I installed Oracle. I tried with Disk cleaning and Defragmentation which helped a bit. Sad part is, increasing my RAM from 512MB to 1.5GB still did not help increase the performance. I am fine with it as of now. So I plan to use 9i. I'm sure learning the latest and greatest (10g) will help make you more marketable. They are relatively the same so I guess it is according to what you are after...latest technology or consensus. BETA= BEware Trouble Ahead! -Rhonda ------------------------------------------------------------ Message no. 5938[Branch from no. 5934] Posted by Harold Harris (hjharris2) on Friday, January 20, 2006 3:17pm Subject: Re: Sagun's Question Which version of 10g I agree Rhonda. Beta versions are to allow customers the change to trouble shoot the product prior to its release. Microsoft does this all the time at no cost to the company. People get paid big dollars to do this on a daily basis yet most companies will send out "BETA" software and expect customers to test it for them....yet people do it. Go figure. -Rhonda ------------------------------------------------------------ Message no. 5945[Branch from no. 5841] Posted by Phanindra Maddhi (pmaddhi) on Saturday, January 21, 2006 11:38pm Subject: Re: Post your problems or questions here Hi Friends i think we all r having good time with problems and solutions. we will continue like this by sharing ideas. The web address is : http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/index.html Yes, it is a very big file so it may take a while to download and also to install it takes time ......also it makes your computer slow ...these are the disadvantages but guys we should see the bright side as well.......to know oracle and gain expertise will benifit us so much. Database is very demanding these days and is used so much ......installing oracle with a lttle trouble will benifit a lot....trust me guys........i know we will have fun earning it.
