Throughout the year, we develop several activities that benefit our profession and community. Here are the activities we are working on for 2006.

Local Activity
Member Directory
This directory was developed to provide the Alpha Chi alumni with a current member list. Until now, Alpha Chi did not have a member directory. By having this, alumni will be able to see how many members the chapter has since it originated in 1940. It can be found online here.

Regional Activity

Keyboarding is not only taught at the high school level, but many elementary schools are incorporating this into their curriculum. However, many teachers are given the responsibility of teaching keyboarding without prior training. The Alpha Chi Chapter presented on this topic at the Regional Office of Education #11 Fall Institute Day at Charleston High School. The presentation cover topics that included technique and curriculum that should be used in keyboarding. Teachers were provided with packets to use for future reference.

National Activity
Personal Finance Lesson

Financial planning is an important topic that is often overlooked in the high school curriculum. It is essential that students understand the importance of planning their finances before heading into the “real world.” This following is a project that can be given to high school students to help them develop their financial planning skills. This activity provides students the opportunity to make financial decisions and allows them to see things from a real world perspective. This activity provides objectives which relate to the NBEA National Standards, which are also given. It is broken down into subcategories (career planning, financial goals, banking services, housing, automobile, insurance, and monthly budget) with guidelines and directions for each section. Finally, a rubric for grading purposes has been developed. Download Activity (.pdf) Download Rubric (.pdf)

Past Activities

Local Projects

  • Updating our website
  • CTE Seminar -The purpose of this project was to give Career and Technical Education (CTE) majors (Family and Consumer Sciences, Industrial Technology, and Business) at Eastern Illinois University the chance to hear from experienced students on various important subjects. This seminar gave the Alpha Chi Chapter a chance to reach out to students within our major and lend a guiding hand. Along with specific information on a handout, our Alpha Chi Chapter gave these students the chance to have their questions answered on various subjects including the content area tests, classes, practicum, and more.
  • Creating a new recruitment letter

Regional Projects

  • Eastern Illinois High School Business Teachers Directory - This directory originated to serve as a resource to high school business education teachers in the Eastern Illinois area. Many changes have occurred with the high school business education teachers in the area. By having this directory, teachers will be able to contact other teachers from different schools in the area. • Host EIBEA at Eastern Illinois University

National Projects

  • Bulletin Board Book - We gathered information from our peers in our methods classes. Through bulletin boards and activities assignments given to us throughout the semester, we have compiled them into a resource document for teachers. This year our resource guide has ideas for keyboarding and computer application classes. It is available in our resource section.
  • New Business Teacher Tool Kit - This guide has many ideas, and activities for high school business educators in a variety of categories such as instructional methods, classroom management, and bulletin board ideas. The document will be a useful resource for first-year teachers, as well as veteran teachers. (.pdf)

Community Service

  • We have participated in the Christmas in Charleston where we were lovely Christmas carolers. After we dressed up in our caroler outfits, we then walked around the square singing Christmas songs for the families of Charleston. Throughout the night, we became perfectionists at We Wish You A Merry Christmas, The Twelve Days of Christmas, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, and many others. Although we were not the best of singers, we still had fun and lit up the faces of many children.
