• City and state officials gathered to praise EIU for its proactive approach to fire safety, which has included installing sprinkler systems in all residential buildings, upgrading fire detectors and alarm systems, and installing a campuswide alert system.
• Matthew Bochenek is well on his way to realizing his goal of becoming a military aviation officer, thanks to being ranked among the top 1 percent of cadets in the U.S. Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps. He was joined on the National Order of Merit List by three fellow EIU cadets in the top 15 percent.
• By allowing musically gifted children to play as part of the Eastern Symphony Orchestra, the Symphonic Honors Initiative Program benefits not only the youth, but also the EIU students who work with them.
• The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs has honored EIU with the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education for going above and beyond basic veterans’ services while fostering a veteran-friendly atmosphere.
