Here are some general statements that are wonderful "list of learnings" for primary children ( and of course -- college students, too ).

SHAPE

• amount lighted: it changes a little each day
• side lighted:

  # sometimes the left side
  # sometimes the right side
  # sometimes all of it
  # sometimes it looks like a banana !
  

• it looks orange when rising
• it looks bigger when rising

• it doesn't 'rise' at the same time each day, and . . .

• SOMETIMES -

# it is seen in the morning
# it is seen in the evening
# it is seen in the afternoons

• SOMETIMES IT IS -

# "left" of the sun
# "right" of the sun
# the S-E-M angle is skinny
# the S-E-M angle is big

With the passing of another month, and depending on the age of the student, these can be re-written using more "science-y terms" like crescent and gibbous, etc.

However, with The Learning Cycle -- gobs of explorations come FIRST - -- words and concepts -- LATER.
