constructing moon phases in the brain

steps to understanding moon phases --

Telling Time

1) stand with arms (representing the east and west horizon) outstretched.

Tape a card with "west horizon" on your right palm & "east horizon" on your left palm.

No - you don't look silly. You just look -- "directionally dysfunctional."

2) have two other objects or people represent the sun and moon.

3) rotate counterclockwise (as seen from above your head).

4) establish the times of day: where is the sun when you "experience"

**** this is very, very important ****

You have to know how to "tell what time it is" by the position of the "sun" compared to your eastern and western horizons.

Do no go to the next step until you can "tell time."

Moon Up -- Moon Down

5) put the "moon" in various positions around you. As you rotate you'll notice that sometimes the moon is in front of you and sometimes behind you.

What Specific Time IS It ?

6) now to figure out what specific "times" it is above and below the horizon. think of the moon's orbit as four 90 degree "quadrants:" A-B-C-D.

Look at the object or person you are calling "the moon" and place them in the different quadrants and begin to "spin." fill in the chart below.

Under Construction

i can't do the 'graphics' on the Net that i want to --- but i'll persist and in a few more hours -- i'll know how.

That's right --- a few more HOURS. Teaching and learning ARE NOT FUN. Those processes are very interesting. Are you willing to study 2-3 more hours ?? Did you come to college for knowledge.

------------------------------A ---- moon ---- D

Sun ------------------------moon --- e --- moon

------------------------------B ---- moon ---- C

what i want to show above -- is simply the moon going around earth and the sun off to the left.

so as the moon orbits earth -- it is in quadrant ( A ) (upper left ) or directly between earth and sun --- etc.

DRAW VERTICAL LINES TO MAKE COLUMNS BELOW -- AND FILL IN

------------------phase --- time lst seen: about --- time last seen: about --- shape --- S-E-M angle
