School-based Cohort Immersion Program

Spring 2005 Calendar

Presentation by Dr. Gregory Michie, February 8th, 2005
A presentation will be given by best-selling author Dr. Gregory Michie on Tuesday, February 8th at 7:00 pm in the Charleston-Mattoon Room of the Union.  His presentation will be entitled, "Teaching in the Undertow:  Resisting the Pull of School-As-Usual."  Dr.  Michie taught for many years in the Chicago Public Schools and is author of two books in the area of teaching for social justice:  See You When We Get There:  Teaching for Change in Urban Schools, and Holler if You Hear Me:  The Education of a Teacher and His Students.  He has also been very involved with the Golden Apple Program.  This is a campus-wide presentation sponsored by the Education Scholars Program. 
 

"Make a Difference" Workshops, Dr. Jim Kestner, February - April, 2005
There will be a number of free workshops for students presented by nationally recognized Character Development Specialist, Dr. Jim Kestner.  The workshops will fall under the umbrella theme of "How to Make a Difference."  Dr. Kestner has developed curriculum for Oprah Winfrey, served as a consultant to Olympic teams and international corporations, and is a spokesman for Hey U.G.L.Y., a non-profit organization devoted to building self-respect and self-esteem in youth.  He is also the Coordinator of Web-Based and Alternative Teacher Certification Programs here at EIU.  The workshops will run as follows:

  • "Addressing Students' Challenging Behaviors."  Thursday, February 10, 6:00 - 7:00 pm, Buzzard 1103.
  • "Building Students' Self-Esteem."  Thursday, February 24, 6:00 - 7:00 pm, Buzzard 1103.
  • "The Conscience of Choices:  Leading Students to Make Good Decisions for Success in School and Life." Thursday, March 31, 6:00 - 7:00 pm, Buzzard 1103.
  • "Toward Higher Ground:  Building Character by Teaching Self-Respect, Self-Discipline and Responsibility."  Saturday, April 9, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm, Buzzard 1103.

Cohort Meeting 
Teachers and features:  We will be having a cohort meeting  Monday, April 11 at 3:30 in the Jefferson school library.  We will be discussing the current semester from the teacher, feature, and program perspectives.  Information will also be given about the upcoming fall semester.   Additionally, cohort members will be given a reflection activity to complete.  If you must leave the meeting early or cannot attend, please complete the reflection and return to your cooperating teacher or Mr. Carey by Friday, April 15. 
 

Toronto for Teachers, May 9 - 19, 2005
Information has been made available regarding the Toronto for Teachers Study Abroad opportunity.  The trip will take place May 9 – 19, 2005.  SCIP students are welcome to study abroad this summer with York University Faculty of Education and the public schools of the Greater Toronto Area. Toronto is the largest city in Canada, offering a wealth of cultural, natural, and historic attractions.  Toronto, “the world within a city,” is known for its cleanliness, beauty, and diverse population.  The Toronto for Teachers program focus will be on global and international professional experiences in model schools interacting with children and faculty.  Briefed by York University faculty, our unique areas of emphasis will be anti-discriminatory education, human rights education, the project approach, multilingual approaches to literacy, and French immersion.

Several EIU courses will be offered, including:

ELE 3350 – Language Arts in the Elementary School
ELE 4741 – Independent Study: International Education
ELE 5990 – Independent Study: International Education

The cost for this trip will be $1,325 which includes the York U. program, city transportation, housing, roundtrip airfare, EIU tuition and fees for 2 credit hours, and excursions to the Stratford Festival Theatre, Niagara Falls, and a Scottish Castle, Casa Lomaplus.
