Internships, at both the graduate and undergraduate level, are a central part of the South Africa Study Abroad program for Fall 2013. Each participant is strongly encouraged to complete her or his required internship during this semester.
Planning internship hours will most likely include more than one site, providing a wider range of experiences for students. The total number of hours will be fulfilled during the semester and each student will confer with Dr. Murphy regarding their preferences among the available choices. All internships are arranged in the same area where the group is staying so that on-going courses and group activities are not interrupted.
Internship opportunities will be coordinated with Mike Denison on-site in Chintsa on the Wild Coast through Volunteer Africa 32°. Placements may include a rural pre-primary school, a community health clinic, working in community development projects in Chintsa West, assisting with computer literacy classes in an area school and working with the Eco-Schools project.
Paul Miedema with Calabash Tours and The Calabash Trust will coordinate internship opportunities in areas around Port Elizabeth that include the community of Missionvale. Placements may include working in a school setting with computer literacy, sports program development with children, primary school, food and clothing distribution centers, community health clinic, and basic support for community development programs.
Web sites that give more information about these programs are below. Do not contact the programs directly, since all arrangements are made through EIU personnel. See the Housing Photo Gallery to see the types of housing we will have access to during our stay in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Chintsa.
