Staff Senate Minutes: April 13,  2005

SENATORS PRESENT:    Greg Boyd, Dan Carpenter, KathyCartwright, Eric Davidson,  Zoraida Irizarry, Adam Due, Tereasa Sims,Doug Sloat, Janice Spraker and Linda Strange

SENATORS ABSENT:      Sandy Bingham-Porter, Katie Rice, Tom Leonard, and Matt Pederson

GUESTS:                        Julie Benedict, Charles Phillips, and Dr. Wayland

President Kathy Cartwright called the meeting to order at 1:15pm in the Schahrer Room.

Charles Phillips explained the BOT regulations pertaining to education.  Currently, the language is different for negotiated relative to the non-negotiated groups, and input was requested on the recommendation for consistency.  Instead of six credit hours for full time employees for one group, the change is proposed to attend two classes since some classes are more than three credit hours.  Doug Sloat moved to accept the change.

Kathy Cartwright will speak at the April 25 Board of Trustees meeting.  Input was requested concerning committee services, efforts, accomplishments, etc. of the Staff Senate.  She mentioned the status of the Letter to Representatives on EIU's Behalf which the VP for External Relations Office will review.  It is emphasized that letters should be handwritten instead of email, fax or typed.  Kathy will present to the CUPB meeting on April 22 the Staff Senate's input to the questions: What attracts students to EIU?  What can we do to enhance students' experiences at EIU? What is the profile of the student best served by EIU?  What two structures using CDB funds should be built and why?  What are the three wishes of your constituency and why?

The March minutes were approved with one change:  strike "our Parking Committee representative" behind Adam Due's name.  Senators were reminded of the Banner presentation on May 11 in the Oakland Room at 1:15pm.  All constituents are encouraged to attend.  Tentatively, a part of Banner will be running by July 2006.

Both Charles Phillips and Dr. Wayland answered two staff issue questions.  Concerning students sitting on interview panels for hiring housing BSW positions:  the students are either Student Senators or their constituents, they do not have voting rights but do have input, there is standard criteria applied to every candidate, and this practice was requested by the VP of Student Affairs.  Concerning why the brick masons and laborers do not receive the same paid holidays relative to the other crafts: they do not have a contract and are not negotiated, it's based on collective bargaining past history, but they are entitled to prevailing rate and local area agreement.

The Staff Senate Elections will be held April 27 at the University Union Bookstore Lounge.  Senators discussed the status and distribution of duties.

Doug Sloat, our CUPB representative, reported that the NCA was discussed, the cost effectiveness of Banner, legislation that Jill Nilsen was tracking, and EIU Day at the Capital in Springfield is today (April 13).  As our Facilities Search representative, he shared that five candidates for on-campus interviews will be the last two weeks in April and the website is www.eiu.edu/~busaff/fpmdir/.  Kathy Cartwright, our VPSA representative, shared that the five candidates for on-campus interviews will be held the last two weeks in April and the website is www.eiu.edu/~vpsasrch/.

The next meeting is May 11, 2005 at 1:15pm in the Oakland Room.  Our meetings are always open and everyone is welcome to attend.  If anyone has any questions or issues that they would like us to ask at our next meeting, please contact one of the Senators.   Senators can be found at http://www.eiu.edu/~stfsenat/members.htm
