NWS Cooperative Weather Observation Data :: Charleston

Students from the Department of Geology/Geography and EIU WeatherCenter observe official weather data (max/min/current temperatures, precipitation, and frost depth) everyday of the year at 6PM Central Time. The data are submitted to the National Weather Service Forecast office in Lincoln, Illinois and sent on to NOAA for quality control. After the preliminary data are made official, the data are put into the archives for future research as well as determining the future climate normals for Charleston.

The Charleston stations first observation was on January 1, 1880. Dr. Dalias Price maintained the station here on campus and then at his home until 2008. It returned to the department on October 22, 2008. The department has established the "Dalias and Lillian Price Memorial Endowment" to help support student opportunities associated with the station.

Data sheets are posted by the 5th of the next month. Data are preliminary until quality checked by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
