Chief Black Hawk lived at a time
when Americans were exploring and settling more of the land of North
America. This caused a problem between many Americans and Native
Americans because they were both competing for land. Most of the
Native Americans did not believe that land could be owned, so they were
often willing to share with the Americans as long as food was not a
problem. Americans, on the other hand, wanted to own the land
they lived on. There were many misunderstandings between the two
cultures, and many Native Americans were tricked into giving up their
land because they could not read the treaties that they were
signing. Chief Black Hawk and his tribe were one group of people
who fought to keep living on their land, but in the end Chief Black
Hawk was also tricked into signing away his land in the form of a
treaty. He is still remembered for his bravery.
