Chief Black Hawk was born into
the Sauk Tribe in 1767. He was a warrior who fought so that the
Sauk Indians could keep living on their land. During the War of
1812 he fought against the Americans on the side of the British because
he did not think the British wanted his land as badly as the Americans
did. When the British lost the war, Chief Black Hawk refused to
leave his land on Rock Island. Chief Black Hawk, along with some
of his tribe members, fought against the Americans in the Black Hawk
War. He lost the war, and was tricked into signing a treaty that
gave the Sauk land to the Americans. He lived the rest of his
life on a reservation in Iowa with his family, and he was well
respected by Indians and Americans until his death on October 3, 1837
from an illness.
